Possible manatee rescue planned on Cape Cod

Far from his Florida home, the manatee loitered along the shore in Dennis on Wednesday afternoon.

Wildlife groups made tentative plans today to rescue an injured Florida manatee this weekend that has been lingering near the shore off Cape Cod.

Representatives from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Cape Cod Stranding Network said that they hope to "attempt to rescue" the manatee by capturing it with a net this weekend. They are looking for a plane to transport the sea cow back to Florida, where veterinarians would rehabilitate it and release it back into the wild.

This is the farthest north that a wayward manatee has ever been reported, said Charles Underwood of the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s manatee rescue and rehabilitation program. As water temperatures drop, the manatee is unlikely to survive in Cape Cod.

It happens. When I was a kid in 1977 living in Dennisport (Dennis is the north side of the Cape and the manatee is actually off Dennisport, but what’s accuracy in the media?) there was a manatee corpse washed up on the beach right at the Harwich line. It’s rare, but not unheard of.

Hyannisport is just a few miles west of Dennis.

I guess it won’t matter if it’s Teddy or a manatee. They could drop either one off at the power company in W. Palm. If it’s Teddy, he can just dry off and go mingle with all his friends down there.

This is the farthest north that a wayward manatee has ever been reported,

They're not even native to north America so that should have been the first surprise.......

Shoot-em and cook-em, they're worthless and pose a greater risk to boaters who may hit them with their motors then face legal action.

"They're not even native to north America so that should have been the first surprise..."

Actually they are native to the Forida coast. Early Spanish explorers delighted in their discovery because in their mistaken belief they were fish, consumed them throughout the lenten season. Apparently they taste a lot like beef.

How much is this going to cost?
--Total cost?
--Cost of each manatee saved?

Whose paying for it? Private? State? Federal?
--If state and/or Federal (a.k.a. in/out of state taxpayers) Why??

The story has been proven false. It was just Ted Kennedy taking a quick swim.

No drowned females were found in the area.

He came up the Gulf Stream traveling from the Straits of Florida toward the Grand Banks, no doubt. He's lucky he didn't end up in the UP of Michigan ... or he'd have been euthanized because of the public gawkers.

Affectionately known as ''Dennis,'' a manatee has strayed hundreds of miles from home.
