5 Years Without a Hangover...
self | October 8, 2008 | RobFromGa

Posted on 10/08/2008 12:39:04 PM PDT by RobFromGa

Today I celebrate my 5th Year of sobriety (although there have been a few days recently that I almost wished I could drink, but not really). October 7, 2003 was my last drop of alcohol...

I said "almost wished" above, I didn't really consider it...but we do live in "interesting times". Too interesting I think...

Here was my first thread on the subject, way back in Dec 2004 when I was just a 14 month old sober guy:

If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter)

Since then we have our Addiction Recovery Ping list which is now over 100 Freepers who have an interest in the subject. There have been a number of interesting threads over the years...

There have been more than a dozen Freepers over the years who have come behind the scenes to discuss their troubles and who I think were able to find some answers from people in our little group. I am sure there are many more who have been helped by the incredible love an compassion shown by so many Freepers.

I am a grateful sober person who is blessed by the many people who helped me to see my way through my problem. If you know anyone who suffers from addiction and doesn't see a way out, read my thread above and it might help. If that doesn't help find help somewhere.

Lastly, I am NOT posting this to ask for congrats or anything, I bared my soul like this to try and help others who might be in need and who couldn't see a life without alcohol.

Freegards, RobFromGa

I didn't renew my membership with (DAMM) Drunks Against Mad Mothers and I decided to join MADD.

Congrats!

Well, going cold turkey on giving up the Pepsi might not be all that easy. I’d have to decrease it by about 4 oz. a day until I had it down to maybe two 8 oz. glasses on ice a day. - It isn’t all that good for us; and mine is worse in that I can’t stand the taste of artificial sweetener; xylitol works okay but isn’t zero calorie. The high fructose corn syrup is awful for us.

If you insist on no congratulations, that is certainly your right. ;o) But congratulations to your wife, kids, parents and other people who have been blessed for the past five years with a sober RobFromGa.

I’ve known someone who literally did drink himself to death. Awful hard on the people who loved him and assumed his share of responsibility while he pickled his brain.

My thanks to all the now-sober posting on this thread. You’ve improved more than just your own lives.

I had the tobacco habit pretty bad since my teen years and quit in March of 1986. It took a full five years before I quit reaching for a pack in my shirt pocket...

27 years in A.A. sobriety and two months today without a cigarette.

I went into the hospital two months ago for gall bladder removal and couldn't smoke for the three days I was in and thought, what the heck....it's a start.

My dad loved his Camels at the rate of a pack a day until a heart attack nailed him in 1959. Back in those days, the event meant 6 weeks in hospital, surrounded by oxygen, which precluded a light up. It was time to quit and he did, living another seven years.

Oh yeah. I meant to tell you about Jack Lalanne’s wonderful new juicer. If you can find his new infomercial about it, be sure to watch it. It looks like it could be a life-changing product. Jack is about 94 I think, so I tend to listen when he talks about good health ideas.

Happy Birthday to you, RobFromGa. I have found your posts very inspirational, especially at the beginning of my sobriety. I will have three years on the 27th. Three years of freedom from hangovers and anxiety attacks, all through the grace of God and the fellowship of AA. Have a great day, RobFromGa!

I never mention politics in the company of fellow 12-steppers, and wish nobody would. These days it's a real danger to a fellowship.

We have that problem at my Saturday morning meeting. I live on the South side of Chicago, so you can just imagine the conversations around the coffee pot! It drives my friend crazy, but I just ignore it. I also work in a law firm in the city and have built up an immunity to pro-obama chatter. This place is infested with libs.
