...Last night (Sunday, October 5th), a telescope on Mount Lemmon, Arizona, detected a tiny moving blip, the signature of a small chunk of rock moving rapidly through space. Twenty-five observations have been done since then by professional and amateur astronomers around the world, and the object's orbit has been pinned down with fairly high precision. It is almost certain to hit Earth's atmosphere around 10:46 p.m. EDT tonight, October 6th. (That's 2:46 a.m. October 7th, Greenwich Mean Time.)
The rock is roughly 10 feet (3 meters) across, and it's expected to enter the atmosphere above northern Sudan at about 8 miles (12 km) per second. The energy released should be approximately equal to one kiloton of conventional explosives. Fortunately, no damage is expected, since the blast will take place in the upper atmosphere....
tick tick tick
Doh,..must be an hour away??
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
The Gods Must Be Crazy!
That was a great movie! The total budget could not have been more than $10,000
Yes, the UK has DST (British Summer Time in their case). That doesn’t effect “Universal Time” (AKA Zulu Time) used for all all astronomical observations, which does not observe DST.
So it’s done hit. Right now it’s entering the atmosphere.
I know it doesn’t affect UTC/zulu/Greenwich but I was comparing with London clock time.
Ok...
The UK should be on summer time until 28 October. It is now 3 AM Tuesday in London if I’m not mistaken.
The bolide is the fireball itself, not the meteoroid.
Thank you.
Can’t find any reports anywhere.
True, the meteor, not the meteoroid. I should have said “In this case caused by a 10 foot rock.”
Sorry, it's an amateur astronomy magazine. The readers would generally know
Ahh, I understand. Thanks. At first glance I thought it may have been a bowel obstruction.
Well, that's it then. Nice knowing you all. Before we go I have just one thing to get off my chest. I think Hillary is hot.
"It'll begin up there, but the next thing you know, it *might* be down here destroying your homes....
unless you have AlGore's 'Carbon Credits for Meteorites'!"
Even if a lot of it made it to the ground it may never be found unless it landed in or near a city. Sudan is a big place with lousy communications. Depending upon what the rock was made of nothing may be left of it. It may have exploded in the upper atmosphere or there may be a 10 foot chunk of it in a hole in the desert.
It's hit Khaddafi?!
= rimshot =
YOU are BAD! ROFL
It is the deliverance of the tewlfth Immam
I was expecting at least visual reports of the fireball. Maybe just haven’t trickled out yet. NRO satellites would also be expected to detect the flash, although you might not be seeing the data. There should also be at least a few terrestrial videos and airliner crew reports.
