Amazing how sports has remained the constant for so many years. Almost all those headlines could be from today, just the names would be changed out.

Now that we have that European unpleasantness behind us we can relax for a few days and enjoy the Fall Classic. The New York Yankees ran away with the American League pennant and now know who their opponent will be. In those days the teams played their 154 games and the two clubs atop the standings at the end went to the World Series. No play-offs unless their was a dead heat. No mediocre teams vying for the last wild card spot.

Columbia must have been a big football power. They got a ton of coverage in the Times. And we must always cover the Fighting Irish.

If the Dodgers have their way, the cubs are going to get shut out again...

GO BLUE (both Dodgers and Michigan!)

But the Dodgers finished 20 games out. They were eliminated weeks ago.

OK - I'm a little slow. You are making a historical reference.

Those Fighting Irish are the reason I don’t bet on sports.

Back in 94 I was in Vegas and notice a very entising sports line. Rutgers vs Notre Dame spread +63. Notre Dame was favored to win by 63 points!!

I couldn’t pass that up so I put 100 bucks on it, sat in the sportsbook and proceeded to go insane as every time the Irish touched the ball they scored, and quickly at that.

The final score was 62 to 0. They almost covered. I had won my 100 dollar bet, but was absolutely miserable and had a splitting headache from watching that bloody game.

That was the last sports bet I ever made.

Hey, I'd be happy with just a PENNANT this year, if not a World Championship. The Cubs have won a bunch of pennants, but none since 1945. That is the longest drought for a pennant, besides the longest drought for winning the World Series (1908).

BTW, Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett, the hero of 1938, after he retired, ran a bowling alley about a mile or so from my house.

Growing up as a kid here in Tennessee, we had no professional sports teams... We had only the four local television stations (ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS.) With the exception of Saturdays (and later on, Monday nights for football) we had a sports drought if you couldn't get out of the house.

At night though, if conditions were right, I could pick up WGN 720 on my little GE pocket transitor radio... Keep in mind that I was supposed to be asleep by 2100 hrs at this age. The head of my bed was at a window that faced north, so doing anything I could (in the mind of a kid that at the time didn't understand radio wave propagation) to help improve reception I would open the curtains and the window. With the radio on the windowsill and the earplug in my ear, I would listen to the game. I had only seen Wrigley Field in glossy color pictures - but in my mind, I was there... It was professional baseball before the primadonnas and the multi-million dollar contracts. It was still a game. And even though things have changed, I still love the game and my Cubs.

Now, my 3 year old son and I sit in the floor together and watch the games. It is great time spent together. He yells "Go Cubbies!!" and chatters when the opposing team is at bat. And when conditions are right, we turn down the volume of the television, and tune in to WGN 720 for the audio portion of the game. It is much more enjoyable that way... I so look forward to watching this little guy play.

I agree that even a pennant would be awesome. But also being a believer in the power of positive thinking I WANT A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Regards,
Raven6

PS: Within the next couple of years (I want the boy to be old enough to enjoy it), I am planning a road trip through St. Louis so that we can watch the Cubs beat the Cards, then on to Iowa to the Field of Dreams Movie Site for a game of catch, then onward to Chicago to catch a game at Wrigley Field. Then it will be back home to watch the games on television or listen to them on the radio. GO CUBS GO!!!

That’s a neat report... A couple of interesting items:

Charlie Root (the winning pitcher in the clinching game) was the guy who was pitching to Babe Ruth when Ruth called his shot at Wrigley.

The newspaper article reports that the Cubs had a torrid win streak the last month, but something seemed a bit crazy... I think the quote was: “They won 21 out of the last 25 including one tie” — I guess that means that one of the 4 was a tie but it sounded like they “won the tie”. Probably just another mainstream media misadventure.
