2008 Republican Party Platform Opposes Bailouts
The Republican Party platform adopted 3 weeks ago explicitly opposes government bailouts of private companies. Here is the exact quote (from the section “Rebuilding Homeownership”):
We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself. We believe in the free market as the best tool to sustained prosperity and opportunity for all.
This plank in the GOP platform is not controversial within the party. Republicans have always believed that when companies make bad business decisions the market will punish them and this is the deterrence for future companies to think through their decisions carefully. The problem now is the utter hypocrisy of throwing overboard a principle Republicans have held dear for a century. If (big) companies lose the fear of bankruptcy because they expect the government to bail them out, they will take unconscionable risks in the future. Maybe somebody should send Henry Paulson a copy of the Republican platform.
Some (conservative) Republicans apparently have read their party’s platform and are balking. Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), for example, said: “I must tell you, there are those in the public debate who have said that we must act now. The last time I heard that, I was on a used-car lot.” Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) said “Just because God created the world in seven days doesn’t mean we have to pass this bill in seven days.” More on the bipartisan outrage at MSNBC.
If McCain takes VA and everything else stays the same, it’s going to be 269-269.
my god. VA won’t go Obama, and if the rest of this map holds true, the House will elect Bambi after a 269-269 tie.
One poll has McCain ahead in MI right now. Let’s not forget that. And I still think McCain will take CO.
If the two Inds. vote with the Reps., it is a tie and VP Cheney would chose his own replacement.
Bernie Sanders will vote for Sarah Palin?
We’re watching the voter fraud cases going in OH, WV, IN, NM and eight other states right now... will post when we get all the info. It’s nasty.
There seems to be some confusion on how the House chooses the president in case of a tie.
It’s not a straight vote of all house members. Each state gets 1(ONE) vote, with that vote being decided by that state’s congressional delegation
That means that California gets exactly as many votes as Wyoming. So Nine Percent Nancy and all her cohorts from Cali cast votes to see who gets California’s vote, whereas Wyoming’s one congressman will decided who gets Wyoming’s vote
If this does come to pass, I like our chances given the current redstate makeup.
No 269-269. It appears that we have at least 1 vote coming from Maine — one district. They divide their EVs. That’s 268-270 McCain.
Where or how does it appear so?
Is the tie resolved if McCain gets any electoral votes out of Maine or Obama gets any electoral votes out of Nebraska? What is the liklihood of either eventuality occuring? I’ve heard that Obama is making some effort in Lincoln. Is McCain making any effort in Maine?
So try this scenario: The newly elected House, seated in January, is unable to muster a majority to choose a president after a 269-269 tie, but the Senate, which is expected to be controlled by Democrats, picks Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. from the Democratic ticket. If the House is still deadlocked at noon on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, Mr. Biden becomes acting president.
Or try this one on for size: Neither the House nor the Senate fulfills its constitutional duty to select the president and the vice president by Jan. 20, so House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, becomes acting president until the whole mess is sorted out.
269 tie: An electoral college ‘doomsday’?

Wow, that sounds better.
(Of course I didn’t believe at first, but looks like you are right)
What happens if no presidential candidate gets 270 electoral votes?
http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/faq.html#270
If no candidate receives a majority of electoral votes, the House of Representatives elects the President from the 3 Presidential candidates who received the most electoral votes. Each State delegation has one vote. The Senate would elect the Vice President from the 2 Vice Presidential candidates with the most electoral votes. Each Senator would cast one vote for Vice President. If the House of Representatives fails to elect a President by Inauguration Day, the Vice-President Elect serves as acting President until the deadlock is resolved in the House.
If Pelosi is acting President, China/Russia will strike knowing that there will be no one in power that will launch a counter attack.
I don’t like our chances.
How many red states - especially mountain states - will have a Dem casting that vote??
We lose a 269 tie.
“Where or how does it appear so?”
I’m trying to find the exact poll data, but here is what I can give you now: Rasmussen has Maine for Obama by 4. This is 13 points lower than Kerry, by the way. There are actually 3 districts in Maine, one has 2 votes, the other two with one each. District 2 is much more rural than the rest, and more conservative, and I believe it is this district that McCain stands a very real chance of winning. Both Maine and Nebraska split their EVs. I’ll post the District 2 polling/demographic info when I find it.
I am not at all sure Obama will lose VA, myself.
I would dispute the Virginia leaning towards Obama. Of course, if you do that then it gives each candidate 269 electoral votes. Deadlock.
