Might purchase a Smith & Wesson M&P 45 ACP
today | me

Posted on 09/08/2008 6:52:43 PM PDT by Grizzled Bear

My wife and I went gun shopping recently. I'm considering a Smith and Wesson MP 45. It will be my Birthday/Anniversary/Christmas present (although I'm hoping for a few boxes of ammo in my stocking).

I'm cautious about weapons that include plastic in their construction. Does anyone here have any practical, long term, experience with this model?

According to the dealer, the Springfield XD is made in Croatia.

That is correct, but an outstanding pistol for the money.

Never mind, I was wrong, got confused with someone else.

Someone is out there talking to politicians behind our backs about microstamping with a firing pin.

I don’t know who it is, but one of these gun companies is. I just don’t know which one it is (I think they are trying to keep it out of the headlines).

You still active duty ?

Since you're AD, you qualify for the Glock law enforcement discount. I'm not a strong Glock advocate, but they are utterly reliable and can take a beating like an AK-47. You can get one for about a hundred cheaper than the MP. But you need to deal with a dealer who can offer than discount.

You may want to tell GB that .......he’s buying, I am retired from active duty......:o)

agree on the combat tupperware. I carry a glock for day to day utility due it’s rugged (melted & dehorned) easy carry and reliability.

Stay safe !

Advice? you’ll get plenty so I will start with: Get a Springfield XD. One hole gun out of the box. 14 rounds of .45ACP in your hand.

AGREED! My wife got me one for Fathers day/Birthday (What a woman!). A very sweet piece. The most reliable auto I know of so far.

I don’t think many here know much about your wife. If she is like my wife, she wants a point and shoot weapon that doesn’t require much maintenance and or special consideration in a desparate moment.

A .38 hammerless snub-nosed revolver is lights out as a self defense weapon for a woman, especially if she is going to get liscensed and carry (IMO). There is nothing sexy about it(the gun), per se. But pull, point and shoot. No jambs, no cocking, no hammer to catch the keys in the purse on the way out, etc. If one round doesn’t fire, pull the trigger again and repeat.

All that said, there are differnt comfort levels for different folks. Good luck. Be safe.

I was looking at the Springfield, the dealer favored the S&W (partly becuase it’s American made). He’s keeping the S&W under $500 for me.

I got the XD for $469 ordered from a dealer. It was $490 something out the door tax included.

I’ve been thinking about a S&W 357 for the versatility of firing 38 shells. Right now my weapons include my Remington 12g Super Magnum Express and what ever they issue me at the Armory window...

That would be my best advice. In fact, my primary carry and shared wife weapon is a Taurus .357. Wife loads it with .38s when she takes it.

Put a set of Crimson Trace Laser grips on it and she’ll love ya forever.

Disagree. The .45 (which is what I own) has more punch, but often carries less ammo. 2 x 9mm rounds ought to do as well as 1 x .45.

Wheelguns can jam, and when they do, you aren’t going to clear it easily. It is usually dirt jamming between the barrel and cylinder, so popping it open and scraping is required. Autos jam more often, but usually clear pretty easy.

Firing as soon as you clear leather is an excellent way to shoot your foot. Putting bullets into the ground between you and the bad guy doesn’t help stop the bad guy. You don’t need to align the sights - at typical firefight ranges, you can train to shoot accurately from the waist - but there is no advantage to shooting as soon as you clear leather.

If in doubt, use the sights. Most cops miss at close range in firefights, and most bad guys are even worse. Bullets need to hit the bad guy to stop him.

Speaking of guns and our sacred Second Amendment is it true that as an Illinois legislator Obama went on the record as saying that all semi-auto weapons should be confiscated? Is he that ignorant? If so, where are the 527 groups? This idiocy needs to be exposed and exposed often.

Well I cant speak from experience as to the new S&W models.. however i have heard good things about them.

As to the plastic pistol concern.. I own just about every glock model that has been made.. shot thousands of rounds through them without a single issue.

The “plastic” guns hold up VERY well.

If you are going to shoot .45ACP the best platform IMNSHO is a 1911. I have heard good things about the M&Ps though, mostly from our local police who may to transition to them next year. They are evaluating them now.

The NM State Police carry them. When you consider that some of their patrol areas are hundreds of square miles with limited radio contact, they must trust them.

While I agree that the 1911 is the best platform for launching 45s you’re getting into a different price level.

An M&P will run about $550 out the door and will do an adequate job - same as Glocks, XDs etc.

A good 1911 that has been tuned for reliability will run you at least $1300-1500.

Still, nothing beats a nice, tuned 1911. Best trigger pull you can get in a pistol and, unlike the plastic guns, has soul.

Yep - I’d buy it again in a heartbeat. You should see the shot group my bud can produce with this pistol. Impressive.
