Barack Obama 'wanted to join US military'

Barack Obama has said he considered joining the United States military when he left school but decided not to
because the Vietnam war was over and "we weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point".
The statement is thought to be the first time during the 19-month-long presidential campaign that the Democratic
nominee for the White House has indicated he once wanted to serve in uniform. The aspiration was not mentioned in either of his two volumes of memoirs.

I think he meant to say “I thought about mooning the military” — but don’t be too hard on him, George Steponallofus wasn’t there to prompt him with the right words.

Man! It sounds like Big-ot Obama really wanted to kill some folk! If he’s president, I wonder how many he’ll kill with his policies?

It’s not fair the he didn’t get his chance to raze villages in a fashion reminiscent of Genghis Kahn. Uh-buma never got his chance to win some medals and then throw them away.

correct me if i am wrong but in 1979 even though there was no draft didn’t you still have to sign up with the selective service? that way if the draft started again they had a pool to fall back on. i signed up in 1974 at 18 and enlisted myself in 1975. if he did sign up as he says then shouldn’t there be a record someone can find?

Wasn't this 1979? Didn't we have a foreign country take a bunch of American's captive that year? Seems if he was serious, that event would have fired him up...

And during the term of his imagined enlistment, the hostage rescue, Beirut, Grenada and Panama.

Plenty of chances for combat if that's what he desired.

I'm sure the Chicago Police Department was hiring at the time, wonder why he opted out of that form of community service.

Did they have selective service requirement that year?

They didn't in 1979, but when it was passed in 1980 men older than 18 had to register. Wikipedia (yes, I know, distrust all things wiki):

Then on July 2, 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4771, Registration Under the Military Selective Service Act, retroactively re-establishing the Selective Service registration requirement for all 18-26 year old male citizens born on or after January 1, 1960. Only men born between March 29, 1957, and December 31, 1959, were completely exempt from Selective Service registration.[2] The first registrations after Proclamation 4771 took place on Monday, July 21, 1980, for those men born in January, February and March 1960 at U.S. Post Offices. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays were reserved for men born in the later quarters of the year, and registration for men born in 1961 began the following week [3].

So he would have had to register in July or August 1980.
