Black Labradors: gotta love ‘em! Beautiful dogs, and dumb as a sack of hammers.

Then there’s the other side of this. A story about my brother’s German shepherd.

She was diagnosed with Lyme’s disease and needed to take two little presciption pills daily for a length of time. Mix the pills in her food and that’ll be good. One day, my brother told some friends and me to “watch this.” He mixes a big pan of dog food and water, dropped in the two pills and mixed them in, and gave it to Duchess. We all watched as she cleaned up that whole pan. When she was done and walked away, those two little pills were sitting in the bottom of the pan. Big ol’ pile of food and she manages to selectively avoid the pills.

So he takes each of those pills, wraps a ittle bread around them, and tosses the “treats” at her to catch and wolf down.

The dog may have been thinking the same thought.

Mine are scattered in ponds around S.E. Michigan.....too deep for labs to dive for.

One of our dogs would do the same thing, the other woofs his food down and wouldn’t notice a pill. When we have to give our dogs pills we buy Cheez Whiz. Easier than using peanut butter, you just squirt the pill with the cheese. I noticed our vet has some new treats with a small pocket in them that that allow you to slip a pill inside.

You're half right. I've had several labs. Got one right now. They're smart dogs and rank high on the dog intelligence list.

But they will chew on and swallow just about anything. Beer cans, bricks, wood, shop rags, razor blades, etc.

My former lab, as a puppy, ate two flipflops. It was ugly coming out.

I have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever also and that fool can turn a chunk of wood into splinters in no time but unlike my Lab he is not inclined to eat the stuff.

Here's my boys:

Amazing isn’t it? Our Labs, when fed vegetables mixed with their chow, would leave any pea in the bottom of the bowl. They way they can gobble, you’d think the tiny round object’s texture [pill/pea] wouldn’t matter. LOL

My American Bulldog is very intelligent, but same thing- any object, no matter what, living, dead, inanimate, whatever, is a candidate for consumption. His poop is like a box of chocolates- you never know what you’re going to get! (sorry for the gross metaphor lol)

Sounds like a real character!

Haven’t had a black lab, but had a golden lab years ago. Her claim-to-fame was jalepeno peppers: she loved ‘em, but couldn’t figure out that what goes down hot often comes out hot. She used to steal them out of the garden and eat ‘em raw when nobody was looking. And then wonder why her bum was hot.

I train German Shepherds now.
