Fools, little children, and people whose brakes fail while driving:
Vanity

Posted on 09/04/2008 1:49:29 PM PDT by Ellendra

I've watched the prayer threads here on Freeper, I figured you might like to see a praise posting.

While driving a short time ago, my brakes failed suddenly as I was approaching a stop sign. I tapped the brakes, there was a weird click, but the truck kept moving.

I put all my weight on the brake pedal, even glanced down to make sure I was hitting the right one. The truck kept moving.

I tried switching to park or reverse, the truck kept moving.

I tried to reach the emergency brake, but its in a weird spot, and my knee doesn't bend that way.

Across the T intersection was a hill. My truck barely noticed the curb. Two pine trees spaced perfectly apart caught my truck like a net and held it there. Didn't even break any branches. I'm not sure it even scratched the paint.

The neighbor whose trees I was in helped me get parked back on the street. The police said because there was no damage and no one else involved, I didn't even need to file a report. The insurance company was understanding and supportive. And it all happened less than a block from home, so I was able to just walk back.

Even the weather was a God-send. I had been planning to work on my land today (my day off work), which would have meant turning the other direction out of my driveway, toward the busier intersection, with a brick wall opposite the stop sign. Or, possibly being in the middle of a highway going 60mph rather than 20.

My hands are still shaking, I think I need to bake something for stress relief.

Sit down and relax. That is quite a story, I would have been horrified at that very moment myself. Sounds to me that at least part of the reason you came out alright, was that you didn’t freak. Kudos to you, and the man upstairs!

Probably a liberal fooled with your brakes. Recent threads have blamed Democrats for how slow FR is running and for Palin’s teleprompter problems, why not your brakes!!!

Seriously, glad you’re OK.

Your right, thanks for the post
Something like that happened to my 80+ year old stepdad. God is awesome and He has given each of us a Guardian Angel to keep us safe, I hope you thanked yours. I wouldn’t be here or able to type this without mine.

Wow. Odd that you weren’t able to switch into park or reverse. I always that that was supposed to be the ultimate fallback. You need to just take it easy and enjoy life the rest of the day.

What, pray tell, is a weird spot for the emergency brake? Which way does your knee bend?

I think most if not all of us experience something (or two or three) in their lives where, afterwards, we’re kind of stunned and think “I can’t believe I survived that”.

We have a very big God.

Now, what was He wanting to get your attention about? :-)

May I suggest something with cheese? A lot of FReepers like cheese...

Have you written anything critical of Obama lately? /sarc>

Glad you're OK -- even a minor "almost" can leave you *shaking*.

Cheers!

Amy Grant had a cool song years ago about this sort of thing, “Angels Watching Over Me”. Glad to know they’re still watching over my little girl! ;-)

Odd that you weren’t able to switch into park or reverse.

Many automatic transmissions have an interlock to prevent park or reverse from engaging when the vehicle is traveling forward with significant speed. Without such an interlock, the transmission would be ripped apart but wouldn't do much braking. Throwing the transmission into low gear and turning off the ignition would be more likely to help.
