Woolly mammoths' last stand before extinction in Siberia wasn't made by natives - rather, the beasts had American roots, researchers have discovered.
Woolly mammoths once roamed the Earth for more than a half-million years, ranging from Europe to Asia to North America. These Ice Age giants vanished from mainland Siberia by 9,000 years ago, although mammoths survived on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until roughly 3,700 years ago.
"Scientists have always thought that because mammoths roamed such a huge territory - from Western Europe to Central North America - that North American woolly mammoths were a sideshow of no particular significance to the evolution of the species," said researcher Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

There’s reason to think that a small handful of mammoths might have survived on the East coast of the U.S. until shortly after whites arrived and Indians started having firearms in their hands.

Lewis and Clark expected to find Mammoths in the North American interior they explored in 1804-6.
Never knew that mammoths were still around nearly 1000 years AFTER the pyramids were built in Egypt!
Camels evolved in NA also..
"According to some US individuals, including the group State Department Watch, eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel Island, are claimed by the United States. However, according to the United States Department of State no such claim exists." - link
I haven’t read all these interesting links, but my first thought upon reading in the article that the Siberian mammoths died aroung 40,000 years ago was Firestone’s book.
Could energy from something like the super nova he hypothesizes have hit the Siberian area at that time? Can’t wait to read the links. Thanks for your efforts.
What did in the mammoths?
“I’ll have the roast mammoth with mango salsa.”
As I think you know, the CoCC book doesn’t go into much detail regarding the earlier bombardment, most of it concerns the Clovis mass extinctions for which they’ve gathered so much evidence. I can’t recall offhand (and I’m not a great housekeeper, so I can’t prove that the book is or isn’t here right now) what the first bombardment was made of, but it must have been faster-moving, probably lighter but more energetic particles.
On an off-topic but related note, the US also has mostly exclusive claims over a number of Pacific Islands, some of which have been shown not to exist, or at least, not to exist any longer. Vincent Gaddis, writing in “Strange” magazine about 15 years ago, penned a fascinating article about various vanished and intermittent islands.
“pygmy mammoth fossils on California coastal islands”
Pygmy elephant remains were also found on the island of Flores, where the tiny Hobbit human remains were found, both probably small for the same reason.
