The 2008 peak of hurricane season is ramping up with Gustav and Hanna. The two storms pose threats to the U.S. At least 22 deaths in Hispanola are attributed to Gustav to date, and a Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica. Tropical Storm Hanna has formed in the Atlantic.

We live near San Antonio and go back to NC at least once a year... we’ve done EVERY route possible I think and still prefer the I-30 to I-40 ... just seems quicker somehow...

AND the drive IS prettier really ... especially through TN .. Arkansas is sorta pretty ... and any road in TX is basically FLAT FLAT FLAT ... laugh..

I remember Carla, I was just a child then and living in the Corpus Christi area. I’ve only evacuated from a hurricane once (Rita), and I’ve ridden many of them out in the comfort of my boarded up brick home. We sit on high ground in the center of my neighborhood. Tropical storm Allison is the one and only time we’ve had a threat of water in the house. After Alicia we had to buy a chainsaw to get into the backyard and lost power for about two weeks. We went to stay with relatives during that time, but that was after the storm. I may, possibly consider leaving with a Cat 4, but never a Cat 3. (FYI - I’m 53 ... but don’t tell anyone)

I know exactly how your area looked after Rita and it was bad! We stupidly chose to stay in Trinity for Rita because we have property there. Mile after mile on the drive back to Seabrook I saw what Rita had done and it was heartbreaking.

I love Seabrook seafood too! In fact I just finished eating a shrimp po’ boy. Mmmm Mmmm good!

Yes, we had a lot of water with Allison but we didn’t get any in the house either. We are in the middle of the block now and we will be the last in the neighborhood to get water but that won’t help if it gets nasty enough.

I was five and lived in Lake Charles when Audrey hit and we all went to Paw Paw’s house to stay. We had candles, flashlights and slept in one room. I thought it was a campout until I was allowed to go out on the front porch the next morning. Paw Paw got out the shrimp boat and went up and down the street in it. I begged him to pick up the packages of frozen food floating down the street (the Piggly Wiggly was just a few blocks over) but he sternly told me they weren’t fit for eating. I didn’t understand and continued to insist we partake in some free groceries. In a few weeks, we drove down to Cameron, Holly Beach and Hackberry. I could hardly believe the sights. It was heartbreaking. Then a few years later came Carla.

Those memories will remind me that hurricanes shouldn’t be taken for granted. I’m not afraid of a 1 or 2 but anymore than that and I’m outta here. The problem is with a 3, it can become a 4 at a point when it’s too dangerous to try and leave. I have a great deal of respect for mother nature. She can be very wicked.

After Carla, or one of the others that we went through, I remember the streets in the neighborhood were flooded. All of us kids thought that was the best thing! Swimming in the streets and jon boat rides up and down the block.

I remember those days :-) but I’d always get a spanking if I got caught swimming in the street because of the snakes in Louisiana. I’d take my whopping though because swimming in the flooded streets was a kid’s dream come true.

I have family scattered about Louisiana. My Mom and her parents were born there. Most have all passed on now, but there’s still a sprinkling of cousins floating about. We should have been worried about snakes and gators when playing in the street water, we had a water canal at the far end that I know for a fact had those critters living in it. Shoot, I’m lucky to be alive. My baby crib had lead paint on it and no one ever heard of car seats, seat belts or bicycle helmets back in those days, :-))

Gustav looks like he’s comin’ to Texas.

I am self employed. I set my own hours and most of my work I do from home so I take freep breaks. The money isn’t that great but I love the freedom.

Gustav looks well developed tonight despite the proximity to Jamaica... look for it to undergo explosive development in the next 24-48 hours that will lead it to run at cat 4/5 in the NW Caribbean. Model tracks are very tightly packed and have been consistently. A storm in this spot is certainly a TX threat but the consistency for LA has to lead the way at the moment.
