The 2008 peak of hurricane season is ramping up with Gustav and Hanna. The two storms pose threats to the U.S. At least 22 deaths in Hispanola are attributed to Gustav to date, and a Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica. Tropical Storm Hanna has formed in the Atlantic.

I left and will if one comes this way again --in a NY minute!
That graphic looks like a hurricane conveyor belt.
too...many...storms...to...assimilate...
I guess that depends on your damage. Hurricane Alicia....We left our mobile home and drove across Houston to my BILs house. It took us almost all day to get back home. We were surprised that the trailer was still standing until we opened the door. The roof had hinged open and we flooded. No electricity or water for two weeks. The heat...the mosquitoes... the mud...the stench. No Fema...no free ice..... We thought we would be so happy when power came back on until it happened and fried all of our appliances. What a mess....
Brownsville
Smart idea! It’s hard to know the terror of a bad hurricane when most Houstonians have only witnessed Alicia. It’s been over 45 years since I’ve been in a bad hurricane and I’m still terrified of being in another.
;’)
Yes, what a huge mess! But you were alive to rebuild. Some hurricanes take everything, like a huge tornado, leaving nothing but flat where neighborhoods were. During Rita my brother-in-law’s sister’s house was picked up and moved about a mile north of where it sat. She lives in Cameron. No one can survive things like that.
She wasn’t in the house was she?
I’m not the right person to ask, but evidently not very. I hope not anyway!
I lived in Houston during Alicia and except for 12 hours without electrcity, in my neighborhood it was a non-event. I remember Carla...who doesn’t?
Oh my, it’s going to be one long-drawn-out weekend :-)
That was a tornado—I bet.
No, she’d left with her 8 kids. They’re through rebuilding the house now. They somehow moved it back to the foundation and rebuilt using what they could from what was left. I understood there were several feet of mud in it. But Cameron is pretty marshy so that’s no surprise.
Where are you again?
It was a non-event for us too in LaPorte. We had about 4 inches of water standing in the street and that was about it. There was lots of wind but nothing earth-shattering. Lost power, went to Louisiana (my son was 10 days old), got a phone call when we got there that the power had come back on so we visited a few minutes and drove back home. It was my ex-husband’s first hurricane.
Always good to “see” you, Texas. Today was the fifth day I ran a chainsaw, chopping up Fay’s mess here. No real damage, except for the tree that wrecked the wellhead at my late MIL’s place out in the country. Plumber swears “I’ll get to it soon as I can!”
Very likely. But I doubt there was even a sand crab still left in Cameron to witness what happened with Rita coming in :-)
