DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan authorities say a shoplifting suspect died after being crushed in a trash compactor where she was hiding.

The Eaton County sheriff's department said two women fled a Lansing-area TJ Maxx discount store after spraying a security guard with Mace. A deputy found one of the women behind a trash compactor.

I think a few states have laws that say that perpetrators of crimes (or their surviving family) cannot sue for injuries or deaths that occur while committing a crime.

Too bad more states didn't have that law; like all of them.

You can’t follow the road if you don’t have a roadmap. And this girl didn’t have one. The one she had been given by Rev Al and Rev Jesse and the gang was seriously misleading.

Maybe you all should go back and read your Bibles and see what Jesus had to say. God is sure not rejoicing that one of His children was so dumb and misled that she ended her life being mashed up with garbage.

You sound like a sincere person and I appreciate that. But you have to understand that your comment is, frankly, a racist one. You imply -- without any evidence -- that because this young woman is black, she blindly follows the politics of the reverends Sharpton and Jackson. Perhaps she does, perhaps she doesn't. But because she's black, you immediately state that she does. In other words, your opinion of her is entirely based on her race.

My opinion of her, on the other hand, is entirely based on her actions as an individual. There's a difference, and it's not really necessary for you to throw the bible at me. But I'll be glad to catch it.

No, I don’t care what color she was. She simply didn’t have good moral formation. But that’s not a capital crime and we shouldn’t joke about it or rejoice in her death.

In fact, I’d bet even you have friends or family members who have kids who have been caught shoplifting (which seems to be a popular crime nowadays). Should they be crushed to death in a trash compactor? Or is it different for them, somehow?

This girl was probably part of a group of low-income, ill-educated, easily influenced black kids who lack good moral guidance. They’re sure not going to get it from the likes of their “black leaders” such as Al, Jesse, and Barry O.

She had an immortal soul and she could have lived a good life, glorifying God. Instead, she lost it in a gruesome way committing a petty crime. God doesn’t want this to happen to His children.

I'm happy to discover that you DO realize that her race is not a factor in this story. But you still make assumptions without any evidence. You claim she didn't receive good moral information. How do you know? How do you know anything about the personal home life of this woman? I know many young people who were raised in what our culture would consider to be fine moral homes. Yet sometimes these young people go on to make mistakes as adults. It happens. We're individuals. And as adults, we're responsible for our own actions, regardless of our upbringing.

Now as for joking about her death or rejoicing in it, if you will do me the courtesy of rereading all my posts, you will find I said no such thing.

One less bottom feeder for the taxpayers to carry.

Agreed.  Now if we could get about 2 million of her compadres to do the same, as well as anyone who believes that there should be anything but punishment for the party who brings the lawsuit.

Was she the child of Sharpton, Jackson or Obama? If not then you’re full of it.

His twin brother wasn't very lucky either.

This handout photo released Thursday, July 31, 2008, by the Dillon County Sheriff's Office, shows the legs of a man who became stuck under a trash bin after what deputies called an attempted copper theft gone wrong. Gibson Cook, 56, was rescued from under a trash bin Wednesday. Deputies said he broke into a landfill Tuesday evening

Huh? My point was that she was influenced by the amoral culture these guys promote. She went out with her friend with a can of Mace to shoplift stuff at a store. She was clearly not a morally well-formed person. But she comes from a culture that doesn’t seem to believe in personal responsibility, and I would be truly surprised to find out that she and her dysfunctional friend had ever gotten much help in becoming responsible, moral human beings. Not if they’re like most of the ghetto products I’ve met, at least.

But that still doesn’t mean that people here should jeer and rejoice at her horrible death. She was a human being, God created her and loved her, and He didn’t want her to end up this way.

So what connection does she have to Sharpton, Jackson or Obama other than skin color?

I believe in cause and effect and from that personal responsibility. Take responsibility for what you said and show me the chain of cause and effect that links this person to them.

Tyree Monique Tate was the name of the woman crushed to death. I know people here will hate me for it, but I really feel sorry for her. I don't hate you, I don't know you well enough. ;o) Dying in a trash compactor and having people all over the world laugh at you is not exactly a great way to go. She was probably not a very bright person to begin with, and she came out of a totally dysfunctional subculture that seems to regard crime as just the normal way of getting by. In fact, they even call robbery “getting paid.” Did you know Ms. Tate personally? Because I find it interesting how you've filled in the details of her life that the rest of us are in no position to know. Oddly, I find myself wondering how the guard she and her accomplice sprayed with Mace is doing.

I wonder if the security guard is just a responsible, honest person working a second job to pay the bills ... like I am.

I wonder if the guard wears contacts in his or her eyes that makes Mace a big problem ... like I do.

I wonder if the guard weighs returning to work at a job where your uniform makes you a target for lowlifes too stupid to know you don't want to suffer for someone else's money ... like I do.

I hope the guard has recovered from the Macing and is laughing his or her tushy off ... like I am.

Say, I'm getting pretty good at this projection psycho-babble stuff. At least my approach comes from sharing a commonality with the target of my empathy, instead of patting a stranger on the head. Have you ever heard of the racism of lowered expectations? The people I blame are folks like Al Sharpton, Barry No Middle Name Obama and Calypso Louie. Blame them all you like, but you seem to have bought into their rackets.

I could end this with something nice, like how I feel sympathy for Ms. Tate's family. Were we face to face, I would avoid antagonsing them by keeping my mouth shut. I can allow them to grieve on their home turf.

But right here I'm going to rejoice over another Darwin Award-winning criminal.

Some people set examples to follow.

Some people set examples not to follow.

Both types are equally important to the education of impressionable youth.

It is up to the parent to point out the correct leasson to be learned.

In this case, it is not the obvious, “don’t hide in a compactor,” but “see where a life of crime gets you?”

Just as the Tree of Liberty needs periodic fertilizations, so too do moral lessons need timely fresh and vivid examples.

She died doing a service to the youth of America, if they will just take it to heart.

Too bad her accomplice didn’t join her.

OTOH, she shows how misplaced “loyalty” and “honor among thieves” can lead to worse consequences for their partners in crime, than simple apprehension: by not ratting out her ‘friend’, she essentially doomed her.

I certainly think it would have been better if the woman had not been killed.

I have known too many people who grew up in the ghetto, are undereducated, poor, etc. who “get by” without stealing and attacking security guards to feel sorry for thieves. I do, however, feel badly that this perp (or anyone) would meet her end in so hideous a fashion.

I can respect your compassion. However, I seem to recall places in the Old Testament harsh deeds were required to prove faith (e.g., sacrificing one’s own child). I am not a subscriber to the ‘environment and influence’ defense.

She committed assault. What if the security guard had asthma and being sprayed by the mace resulted in a fatal attack? What if the guard had a heart attack as a result of the assault? This was premeditated thuggery.

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.

I heard about this last night. The compactor was not on the TJ Maxx lot, but behind the Goodwill store across Saginaw. At least, that's what the Lansing State Journal was reporting yesterday.

I don't know if any of you who have posted tasteless comments on this thread have ever worked in retail, but I have, and I have used industrial compactors like this one. They are supposed to be kept caged and locked at all times, unless in use. Yes, this woman was a criminal. I don't think that means she deserved the horrific death she got, and believe me...it was horrific. And she was probably conscious through most of it.

Goodwill Industries is certainly facing a lawsuit, and they will lose or settle. Rightfully so. The compactor in question is one hundred yards away from a neighborhood full of kids. This was a criminal that died, yes...but it could just as easily have been a ten year old boy playing hide and seek with his friends. That Goodwill left the compactor open and accessible was negligent in the extreme. JM2C
