Not much to say about this one except I hope it ain’t living in your house.

I knew a mean/wild cat in college, a big, old black tom. We called him `Frankencat’.
He would come around in the evening for scraps, then head out to fight and ****.
You couldn’t get near him. His ears were notched, he had scars all over, big clumps of hair missing. Someone had managed to sew a button over an empty eye socket.
Now that was a mean cat. I think a meaner dog finally killed him.

It’s a possible explanation, but not more likely than not. Some cats are just ornery.

My husband's cat is pretty mean, but only to certain people (me). The worst abuse she's ever suffered is having to wait an extra fifteen minutes for her dinner. She makes similar noises at me when I'm cutting up raw chicken, trying to score some.

My cat—the “real” Renfield—is loved, adored, brushed, petted, gets fresh raw tuna whenever I come back from an offshore fishing trip, fresh venison after every hunt, and has never been abused a minute in his life. He spends most of his time stalking my lap. But he behaves just like “Burger” when he goes to the vet. He has so intimidated the local vets, that they are very reluctant to do any procedure on him without anaesthesia.

Small cats are capable of making incredible noises under stress. We have a small (8 1/2 pounds) calico female who made noises of a type and volume we had never heard come from her before when we adopted an older, large (easily 2 to 3 times her size) male tiger cat (now sadly gone). Both were neutered. Basically, all the yowling and growling was her way of saying “Stay the He** away from me!” After a month or so, things got back to normal. (This was aided by the fact that the male had about the most gentle and understanding personality I have ever seen in anything, human or otherwise.)

This video has been on YouTube for a while. It is a classic.

Since the scene is in an animal shelter, my feeling is that this small cat (I assume it's female) is feral and is just acting out because it is really scared. Of course, whether it was born feral or became feral, whether it was an abused house cat, or it had been traumatized by dogs, other cats, mean kids, or whatever there is no way of telling without further information.

I think it was terrified, feral and possibly really sick with some type of disease or ailment. Obviously one wouldn’t want a pet to behave that way.

For all those who think this cat was mistreated - well, I don’t know about this cat (he seems fat enough) but I can tell you I know a cat who was just as bad.

The cat never got anything but the most loving treatment its whole life. When I would go visit, it would run out and bite my legs. Vicious.

Some cats just hate people they don’t know. You can’t argue with a cat. They do what they do and that’s it.

I had a feral cat for a while. The story of how I managed to have a feral cat living in the house is a long one. Needless to say, taking her to the vet was always a challenge: I adapted the method I use for taking spiders out of the house, only with a larger "cup" (a trash can). Once we got her to the vet, it was impressive: the vet tech wore thick elbow length gloves and managed to restrain the cat well enough that the vet was able to do a full exam (including looking in the mouth!) and shots without tranquilizing the animal. Unfortunately, at the age of 4 1/2, our feral cat got FIP and died.
