Saw marks are visible on one piece and another has been turned and decorated on a primitive lathe by a skilled craftsman...
The finds have been preserved in water and will go for microcarbon dating that could pinpoint when the timber was felled...
Also found over recent weeks was a further piece of high-status Venetian glass, dating from the wealthy Leslie family's centuries of ownership of Fetternear. Their stately mansion was reduced to a roofless shell following a fire in 1919.
Another excavation will go ahead at Fetternear next summer.
A search for funding from corporate and academic sponsors is already going on to continue work on the massive complex and preserve the latest finds.
