for any interested in the subject, I recommend "Modern Fascism: Liquidating the Judeo-Christian Worldview" by Gene Edward Veith.

We must know what fascism is so that we can recognize it when we see it. This will mean undoing certain misconceptions. Fascism is not conservativism. It is not the "right" wing" as opposite of the "left wing." Such simplistic definitions and neat dichotomies may carry some truth, but they hide more than they reveal. Specifically, they hide the moderness of fascism, its appeal to progressives and the avant-guard. Fascism has always been on the cutting edge. p. 13.

but wait, there's more (from Veith's blog):

Dear Professor Veith - Well, I can tell you didn’t write *this* book. There are important differences between Liberal Fascism and Modern Fascism. That said, it would have been very, very, hard for me to write my book without yours. I found your book to be extremely helpful in helping me to understand many of the themes I deal with in my book. I have touted it to friends many times. And when I post my bibliographical essay next week, you’ll see it mentioned prominently. Anyway, I’d be delighted to know what you make of my book. All the best,

Jonah Goldberg, Author, Liberal Fascism.

Liberal Fascism is the perfect decoder ring for understanding Obama and his "politics of meaning", and why he appeals to progressives with their need to find transcendence through the State.

As for the length, I it's just about right, but I like the idea of making a shortened version for mass consumption. Back in the day, they published a condensed or serialized version of Hayek's Road To Serfdom in Reader's Digest, which I've read was very effective in getting it into people's thinking. I think the ideas in Goldberg's book are so important and so revealing that an approach like that would be really good.

An excellent review and blog. This is a subject, 'Liberal Fascism', which has been appearing on more and more radar screens in the last decade or so. The tactics formerly employed within the shelter walls of academia have moved into real-life. At first, using the ter, 'liberal fascism' was met with quizzical dis-belief - "No...thats just ridiculous...we're too smart for that". But it has slowly entrenched itself and morphed into the 'progressive' movement and a form of social/cultural acceptability.

Its what its called...another form of Fascism....clear and true.

Funny, but I’ve seen this attitude in FR.

I’ll try to read it but to be honest I have a hard time with political books wiyh words such fascists, as well as all those “isms” like “liberal fascism”, militarism, nationalism.....

I’ll hold all other comments until (or if) I read the book.

Thanks for the ping and review.

I’m well into this book now....also, Three New Deals by a guy named Schivelbusch....also talks about fascism and describes similarities between the Nazi’s, Mussolini, and FDR’s New Deal. Very interesting read.

A couple of points

Wilson had a stroke in 1919 and some historians claim his wife was running the country for the end of his term. The Palmer raids were part of this period and were either approved by Mrs. Wilson or just by Attorney General Palmer. I am not sure it is fair to say that he stepped down, rather he was not capable of running again.

Karl Marx's parents were Jew's, his dad gave up the Jewish religion and converted to Lutheran in order to practice law in Germany. Karl detested all religion.

Pretty good review. A quibble about the last part, though: I have to take issue with your characterization of Pat Buchanan as a “neo-progressive;” he is nothing of the sort. He is anti-imperialist to a fault: quite the opposite of a progressive (who, as you have noted, were militaristic imperialists).

I should add that what Buchanan actually is is a paleoconservative. If you read the writings of the Old Right, you’ll see he generally fits in.
