SYDNEY, Australia -- An elderly Australian woman knocked over and savaged by a large kangaroo on her farm was saved when a dog rushed to her aid and chased the animal away, her son said Saturday.

Rosemary Neal, from western New South Wales, was attacked by a male kangaroo estimated to be up to two meters (six feet, six inches) tall and weighing 100 kilograms (220 pounds) as she crossed a field to check her horses, her son Darren said.

"The kangaroo has just jumped up and launched straight at her. He hit her once and she just dropped and rolled," he said.

"My dog heard her screaming and bolted down and chased him off. If it wasn't for the dog she'd probably be dead."

The 65-year-old woman was taken to hospital after the attack on Friday.

"Her face has been ripped apart, her hand has been mauled, and she's got scratches all over her back and concussion," Darren Neal said.

The region near the town of Mudgee had been overrun by kangaroos in recent years, he said.

"The whole town has been complaining about these kangaroos -- you can't drive down the street without swerving to miss them," he said.

There’s an Oz restaurant on Mulberry Street near St. Pat’s church that prepares emu for an appetizer, and Kangaroo steaks for dinner. Not a big meat eater, but Roo is very good.

We extended the hunting season in NJ because the rats with antlers kept ruining many a soccer mom’s day as she drove her kids back from practice. The worst time to drive in my area is during the rut in October. That was the only time I ever saw a deer fly...from the bumper of an Explorer, straight up into the air.

The deer in my area seem to love living in the rough on golf courses and in those little wooded areas the DOT like to plant on highway exits around here. REAL SMART NJDOT!

I am surrounded by subdivisions and my area has been the fastest growing area in Michigan for the past few years.

The original entrance into my subdivision is now accessed from an 8 lane highway (4 east and 4 west). That original entrance goes thru a small wooded area which has a drainage ditch flowing thru it. This past winter I saw 5 deer, a fox, a coyote, several pheasants and a couple years ago the drainage ditch was dammed up by some beavers........

Any small patch of woods in my area is likely to contain deer. Eventually they get knocked off by the cars......

Here is an aerial photo of my neck of the woods. Hopefully you can pan out to see the urban sprawl and the small wooded area which is the haven for wildlife..........

Oh, I didn't even mention the over population of coons and possums...........I trap 'em then kill them because it's against the law to transport them to other areas.

Wildlife heaven

In Australia almost every vehicle in the rural parts have them. They naturally call them roo bars. Here is the wiki article...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_bar

TheMom once whooped a goose’s ass after it bit TheBoy. A roo would not have been a problem either.
