SYDNEY, Australia -- An elderly Australian woman knocked over and savaged by a large kangaroo on her farm was saved when a dog rushed to her aid and chased the animal away, her son said Saturday.

Rosemary Neal, from western New South Wales, was attacked by a male kangaroo estimated to be up to two meters (six feet, six inches) tall and weighing 100 kilograms (220 pounds) as she crossed a field to check her horses, her son Darren said.

"The kangaroo has just jumped up and launched straight at her. He hit her once and she just dropped and rolled," he said.

"My dog heard her screaming and bolted down and chased him off. If it wasn't for the dog she'd probably be dead."

The 65-year-old woman was taken to hospital after the attack on Friday.

"Her face has been ripped apart, her hand has been mauled, and she's got scratches all over her back and concussion," Darren Neal said.

The region near the town of Mudgee had been overrun by kangaroos in recent years, he said.

"The whole town has been complaining about these kangaroos -- you can't drive down the street without swerving to miss them," he said.

Accidents happen, you really can't be held accountable if one jumps in front of your truck?

As long as your catcher doesn't cause it to come through your windshield.

Kinda like the overpopulation of deer here in S.E. Michigan. The only solution is to hit them with your car (over 60,000 annually) or shoot them.

Unfortunately they live in the wooded areas amongst subdivisions which makes them unavailable for shooting with either shotguns or bows..........Bad situation all around.

Lotsa places with similar problems and too close in to use rifles or anything noisy. EVERYBODY in the world should have at least one compound bow and know how to use it. That's the basic solution to such problems:

For people who live in the country, on farms, or ranches, dogs can be extraordinarily useful animals.

and I thought our wild deer were becoming a problem.

It was ten years ago when wifey and I were in Perth on seafood (lobster importer) biz, and we were invited to "the farm and winery" for the weekend, well inland....got to see tons of those pests bounding thru the vineyards and across the roads.

We were warned that were we to drive in the countryside (fat chance....wrong side of the road over there) at dusk to be on high alert for 'roos crossing.

I have two things to say to you.

1. You are one disturbed individual.

2. That is really freakin funny!

I grew up the Detroit/Inkster area and I never saw Deer in the street.

I never saw very many stray dogs either...

I’m confused. Are we supposed to “Tie Your Mother Down,” or “Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport?”

Whichever keeps your chewing gum from losing its flavor on the bedpost overnight.
