Sailors and scientists have been mapping ocean currents for centuries, but it turns out theyve missed something big. How big? The entire ocean is striped with 100-mile-wide bands of slow-moving water that extend right down to the seafloor, according to a recent study.

Ping.
Polynesian seafarers have been said to be able to track ocean currents. In the past, at any rate. Maybe this is how they managed to cross the Pacific.

And when Rose O’Donnell goes swimming in the ocean in her big red bikini, I guess that qualifies as the Red Spot.

Do they alternate direction? BINGO! We have a winner!
I wonder if they have noticed the similarity to Jupiter yet...Now they need to discover a stationary, cyclonic eddy current between two bands and the analogy would be complete.

Do they alternate direction? The article says the 'stripes' alternate in the direction they move. I don't know if individual stripes change direction.

Real men would ride sharks. ;-) Was tried. Sharks must be fed though, and we ran out of lawyers.

Sharks must be fed though, and we ran out of lawyers. Then you guys had better lawyers than did the Westerners. Sharks won't eat our lawyers out of professional courtesy.

“Nikolai A. Maximenko of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and colleagues developed a precise new method for measuring the topography of the ocean surface by combining data from satellites and from the movements of more than 10,000 drifting oceanographic buoys. In doing so, the team generated detailed maps, in which they first noticed the peculiar striations. Some scientists initially dismissed the stripes as statistical artifacts, but Maximenkos team dug deeper, looking for a similar pattern in water temperature measurements from two test areas in the Pacific. “

A worldwide crisscrossing pattern of ocean current striations has been revealed through measurements made by drifting buoys over a period of more than 20 years and through satellite readings of ocean velocity. Blue bands represent westward-flowing currents and red bands indicate eastward-flowing currents that move at roughly 1 centimeter per second. Credit: Nikolai Maximenko, University of Hawaii

Interesting. These currents ride piggy back on the previously known ocean currents.
