Today is the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's 'House Divided' Speech.

Posted on 06/16/2008 9:49:45 AM PDT by Borges

"A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided.

It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South."

I wonder if the Lost Cause Brigade will be along to tell us all how that speech is nothing less than a declaration of war against southern civilization.

I don’t doubt it. I live in GA, and that stuff is everywhere, even in the school system.

If only more emphasis was paid to this line in 2nd paragraph “the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction”.
In other words do not allow it to spread to new states and territories, contain it in the South, and it will eventually end on its own. And it would have too.

This country is 97% as divided as it was in 1861. Hold on tightly when the last 3% occurs.

March 21, 1861 — CSA Vice President Alexander H. Stephens, Cornerstone speech
http://members.aol.com/jfepperson/corner.html
“...last, not least. The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution — African slavery as it exists amongst us — the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the ‘rock upon which the old Union would split.’ He was right. What was conjecture with him, is now a realized fact.”

November 13, 1860 — Robert Toombs, Speech to the Georgia Legislature
http://members.aol.com/jfepperson/toombs.html
“...In 1790 we had less than eight hundred thousand slaves. Under our mild and humane administration of the system they have increased above four millions. The country has expanded to meet this growing want, and Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri, have received this increasing tide of African labor; before the end of this century, at precisely the same rate of increase, the Africans among us in a subordinate condition will amount to eleven millions of persons. What shall be done with them? We must expand or perish. We are constrained by an inexorable necessity to accept expansion or extermination. Those who tell you that the territorial question is an abstraction, that you can never colonize another territory without the African slavetrade, are both deaf and blind to the history of the last sixty years. All just reasoning, all past history, condemn the fallacy. The North understand it better - they have told us for twenty years that their object was to pen up slavery within its present limits - surround it with a border of free States, and like the scorpion surrounded with fire, they will make it sting itself to death.”

December 27, 1856 — Robert E. Lee, Letter to his wife on slavery
http://fair-use.org/robert-e-lee/letter-to-his-wife-on-slavery

“...The views of the Pres: of the Systematic & progressive efforts of certain people of the North, to interfere with & change the domestic institutions of the South, are truthfully & faithfully expressed. The Consequences of their plans & purposes are also clearly set forth, & they must also be aware, that their object is both unlawful & entirely foreign to them & their duty; for which they are irresponsible & unaccountable; & Can only be accomplished by them through the agency of a Civil & Servile war.”

Lincoln was a tyrant.

He placed the Maryland legislature in concentration camps. He closed over 250 newspapers. He disarmed the citizernry, in violation of the Second Amendment. He tried to have the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court arrested. He was a bisexual queer, that hated Christianity, and destroyed the Constitution of our Founding Fathers.

Why do we consider this sum'bitch to be the "greatest President of our Country?"
