David Cook Is A Rock-And-Roll Red State, In 'Bigger Than The Sound'
eMpTyV ^ | 5-29-2008 | James Montgomery

'American Idol' winner is embodiment of the overwhelming majority of people in this country, whom I will never understand

To put it in much clearer terms: I do not understand the phenomenon of David Cook because David Cook is pretty much everything I am not. He is a former frat guy turned bartender, the kind of guy who willingly chooses to perform songs by Switchfoot and Collective Soul and proudly proclaims his undying affection for Our Lady Peace. He sings in an earnest, gruff, decidedly weathered voice, not unlike the kind you hear all over rock radio or in a Chevy Truck commercial. If you squint funny, he looks a whole lot like Chris Daughtry, only with more hair. He has probably never cared what a blog has to say (if he's ever read one), and he likely still has an AOL e-mail address. He is a Kansas City Royals fan.

He is a Rock-and-Roll Red State. He is Rolling Thunder across the Fruited Plains. He is SUVs and flag-waving and the American Dream. He is basically the living, breathing embodiment of the overwhelming majority of people in this country, whom I do not, cannot and — let's face it — will not understand. Not ever. He makes me realize just how detached I am with reality and how unimportant I am. And that makes me sort of hate myself. And this country. Sort of.

Let me point out ... I mean the concept of him, not the actual man. Cook seems nice enough. He has cool facial hair, and he did a killer job on Lionel Richie's "Hello." But it's what he means as a whole — the ideals and social forces he represents — that frustrate and, well, sort of terrify me.

There's plenty of places you can move to, after you leave this country you so hate.  Don't let the door hit ya.

MTV is complaining about music? What the hell does MTV know about music?

After all, last week Cook crushed presumed "Idol" favorite David Archuleta by more than 12 million votes to be named the champion of the show's seventh season. That could just be due to the overwhelming number of cougars who turned out in support of him (never underestimate a horny recent divorcée with speed dial).

Horny recent divorcees???

Sounds to me like someone had a wee gay crush on David Archuleta.

A very good question. It’s music AND it’s not rap or hip-hop.

Cookie won because of cougars? This guy hates horny recent divorcées for stealing Archuleta’s thunder?

Is there twilight zone music playing on this link?

Jealousy rears its ugly head in the queerest ways.

And by "queerest" I mean "oddest". Not..you know..

I love the Cookie too! I’ve been listening to his studio version of some of the songs he sang - they are FABULOUS.

I wonder how anyone can criticize a country where they enjoy all the freedoms that got them to where they are?

This guy needs medication.

Got that right. Did you see this part?

And there are underlying consequences here that I don't want to think about. Like, what does David Cook winning "American Idol" mean for Barack Obama's chances in November? Or for ever withdrawing from Iraq? Or ending our dependency on foreign oil? I worry about these things because David Cook makes me worry.

First off, no one makes you do anything. Second, if you are seeing a connection between David Cook winning AI and the election, then, yes you are really detached from reality. Why do I picture his office to have newspaper clippings posted from floor to ceiling with random words circled as he rants about the secret code the government is sending him?

This is what passes for musical criticism at MTV? It's poorly written, solipsistic, and profoundly shallow; a journalistic equivalent of masturbating while looking in a mirror. The author is, in other words, the perfect Obama voter. David Cook, on the other hand is a great entertainer: outward-focused, engaging, and ambitious.

You are very welcome! It’s just too bad Amazon.com took down his album pre-Idol. I think there is a used on for sale for $99.99.

No longer all Bush's fault?

LOL! I've been waiting for this day. Of course, I never expected the fevered foam-at-the-mouth Left to redirect their Bush hatred to a talent show winner, but hey...a raging hedonistic lifestyle will surely make this Montgomery dude get over his feeling of being unimportant. After all, he CARES. More than you and me and the next guy (such is his conceit). Not about so-called Red staters, you understand, but about all the downtrodden, unappreciated, presumably struggling Josiah Lemings out there in the dark.

OK, I get it, Montgomery. Now where did I put my barf bag...

David Cook is why the reason the rest of the world hates us.

Seems that journalist Montgomery needs a little help with sentence structure and grammar. "Is why the reason?" Yeah. OK. Sure. Stop babbling and go back to your crack pipe, Monty. I promise you won't be missed while you're gone.

This Montgomery liberal probably whines about everything. One of those "They're not just like meeeee, so they're WRONG!" types.

LOVE the Cookie. LOVE the Cookie.

Grin...if his initial foray onto the Billboard charts is any indication, the Cookie is gonna have a huge career. His debut single is the highest selling single of any AI winner since season #2. RCA/19 Entertainment released studio versions of his AI performances, and they're selling like hotcakes. So David has something like 17 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. No other artist has come close to this number of songs on the charts in the same week since the Beatles set the record in 1964.

David's first album is tentatively scheduled to be released in the fall. If he gets to do the pop/rock album he wants, and the material is good, and if public interest in him continues at its current level, the album will be a smash hit.

Which, of course, will leave the likes of Montgomery to stew in their own putrid juices, wondering why Cookie and not them.
