Microsoft on Thursday revealed its plans for an advertising network built into its Zune media players, offering advertisers a direct line to consumers through the device. Yahoo writes that the company demonstrated the concept using a phony Doritos mockup. In the example, a user could befriend a musician through the Zune social page on a Doritos sponsored concert to view news and updates on the artists profile.
Once added to the friends list, users could also email the profile to friends, as well as downloading selected tracks from the website for playback on the Zune. When the recipient receives the email through Microsofts Hotmail service through their mobile phone, a brief ad will trigger, followed by a short game similar to Asteroids.
Provided the user does well at the game, they earn a coupon for a free bag of Doritos chips, with map directions to nearby stores that sell the chips.
While the program is currently in planning stages, requiring solid back-end infrastructure, Microsoft stresses that this isnt something that is far in the future, that it is possible with current technology.
Buy a Zune, get free spam ping!
If anything turns me off to any software or online service, it is an endorsement my Microlame. ;-)
They must be trying to push users to the iPod.
I am not so sure Microsoft can afford to put this software in new Zunes. The processors might melt down.
What a great way to drive down sales.
I have a 30GB zune but have never bought a song from the zune marketplace. Or from any site for that matter.
Obsess much mr Jobs? Nothing in your story says it is mandatory nor harmful, sounds like a good use of a function that is under utilized right now anyways. But go on and obsess some more.
Yes, I know. I posted that one too. :D
Sooo.. what you’re saying is that ads you had no idea were going to appear on your palm device are a GOOD idea?
You should, they are DRM free or get it at Amazon. Also you can get unlimited songs for a monthly fee, they arent permanent, and you can now get tv shows and other movie downloads on the site as well. Frankly I can’t live without my Zune the way I could after my iPod broke for the second time.
Ummm no because it will be optional, if you knew anything about the social aspect of Zunes, which you obviously don’t.
If you check out MS’ history on this and extrapolate, about 30 minutes after they add the capability to the Zune software for popup ads to appear, someone will exploit it and it’ll be nothing but Herbal Viagra ads for Zune users from then on.
You have to have your wifi on for that to happen, and I very doubt your nihilistic anti-Microsft hate and obsession over the Zune will come to frution, if anything you are showing your naivity on the subject.
Satire, right? This is a joke, right? Right? I'm laughing. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Stop it. You're killing me.
How about this:
If Microsoft does this and it doesn’t get exploited in the first month the ad system is out, I’ll donate $5 to FR and publically apologize.

Care to put your money where your mouth is?
I definately agree to this because it simply isnt possible the way you are describing it. And no spammer in his right mind would concentrate his wares on a market so small with asystem that will likely have more than half of the participants wifi off.
Besides we all can’t be as perfect as the iPhone

I saw it. I thought it should be linked.
