Not to rain on your parade, but the Dollar Store is where old merchandise goes to die. It’s stuff the manufacturers couldn’t sell or had laying around the warehouse or even found in a warehouse somewhere.

The Dollar stores (there are several chains) are not job lot stores like Big Lots or other stores that specialize in liquidated inventory. Family Dollar for instance has thousands of stores and several distribution centers. As such they have alot of buying power and primarily sell their own generic-type brand.

Alot of times, it’s redesign. Change to product specs, so they put out all the old stock on the cheap.

That is how Walmart got its start with low pricing in its earliest days. They purchased close-out, discontinued, insurance sales, and seconds merchandise in bulk at pennies on the dollar and redistributed it to the stores. In those early days, it was not uncommon to find the Walmart label stuck over the label of the original store.
