The ash clouds are some of the most impressive I've seen since Pinatubo

We were in the South China Sea after the big eruption of Pinatubo. IIRC we began to see very fine ash particles in the air at about 1000 miles from the eruption. We pulled into Subic Bay a few days later and I hardly recognized the place under all the ash. Went through quite a few earthquakes and smaller eruptions while we were there.

Later I was on stationed on another ship that was inport during the big eruption. Three and four years later ash was still washing out the cracks and crevasses when it rained.
