The Hobbit Hole XXXVI - O! Water cold we may pour at need...

Posted on 05/03/2008 8:48:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I wanted to get a cheapo keyboard for the new laptop and cheapo speakers for the old laptop. The computer store doesn’t open until 10:00. Had to pick up prescription cat food and thevet doesn’t open until 9:00. Heh. Now it’s 45 minutes to game time.

OH, that does sound good. Glad you had a great dinner. And you didn’t have to go to ~ town ~ to do it.

Hey! That’s great! It warms this guy’s heart to know that there’s still school-age shooting teams out there. I don’t think my old high school even has a rifle team any more. It was a very enjoyable thing for me back then and it’s too bad that today’s kids don’t always get that opportunity.

It good to hear that it’s happening somewhere.

We’ve got the Busch - er, “Nationwide” - series running in Milwaukee tonight at 7:00 and NASCAR runs tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.

I stopped in at Tuesday Morning on my way back from the library and they had a huge selection of OXO Good Grip tools on sale, about 66% off retail price. We got $90 worth of tools for $29, since one can never have too many tools. We really like the ergonomics of the OXO tools.

I think I need a set of tools for every room....just so I can find them when I want them.

So much for everything in its place.

Yup, they have done well over the years, I think it’s been going on for about 20 or so years. A couple of the teachers shot on our league team in the old days and with a bit of support from the local trap club, it slowly took off. It’s an equal opportunity sport, though only one girl made the competition team this year.

Our high school didn’t have a .22 rifle team, the Knights of Columbus had that gig all sewed up for years.

Trapshooting is good game, I enjoyed it more than Skeet. Trap would probably appeal to mathemitian in him. Five stations, five angles through randomly thrown, and distances varying from 16 to 27 yards from the house. You can spend about any amount you want to for a shotgun to shoot trap. My favorite, is the venerable Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge pump shotgun. Any 12 gauge will do although a few use 20 gauge. Over Unders dominate the dedicated shooters.

Ergo, my comment about never having too many tools. Some of them are going in a drawer upstairs so I don't need to go down to the basement when the project is on the second floor! I've done enough of the attic (which is another flight of stairs up) to basement run this week to last me a long, long time. LSA

Tonight's Saturday Night Gun Pron [tm] is again a bit brief, because I'm still waiting for stuff to arrive!. One thing that did arrive was the Leupold scope for my DPMS .308 squirrel gun (which makes it a "BR", and not an "EBR".)

It's the Leupold Mark 4 Long Range Tactical (gotta use tactics against those squirrels) in 4.5-14X, 50mm lens, and the new-ish TMR (Tactical Milling Reticle), as opposed to the traditional Mil-Dot.

Last year was Leupold's 100th anniversary, so a few extra goodies were included.

I understand the decal, but I'm not sure what to use the black cloth for. You might also notice the unconventional mounting method. That's because the QD mount from GG&G still has not arrived, despite being ordered three weeks before the scope itself.

One thing not included in the package was the ARD. I don't like using "naked" optics, because squirrels are crafty, and I don't want to spook them with glint off the glass. $67, but a good investment.

The lens cap is set at an odd angle because there will be a Docter red dot sight peeking between the windage and elevation turrets.

The reticle itself is vey interesting, and will help you get a good shot on those pesky squirrels.

An interesting part of the story was how hard I had to look before I found this scope online. I had a list of all the Leupold features I wanted, like illuminated reticle, M2 knobs, etc. But most sites had an "out of stock" next to my top picks. Finally, Midway USA had the best compromise of those few "tactical" scopes still in stock. I'm getting the impression that EBR accessories are almost getting as hard to find as the EBRs themselves.

With elections coming up, and considering how 5 judges on the Supreme Court have just declared that every inhabitant of this planet has American habeus corpus rights, I don't look for a slam-bang resolution for the DC gun law case, which everybody on both sides agrees will be the definitive word for the next 50 years, at least. And it's almost certain the old leftist geezers on the court will be replaced by young leftists when they finally let go of their deathgrip on their seats.

Some folks here are researching increased ammo buys, and reloading, which is very wise. My concern right now is for repair parts that could dry up, or become heavily regulated. And the most fragile parts, and the ones least likely to be recreated by average shop skills are springs.

That led me to Mount Sinai of springs, Wolff GunSprings. I was stuned by the springs they make for guns I never thought of, along with some that I have that I never thought "springs". Even if the gun is new, I ordered "rebuild kits" for a slew of rifles and magazines. I consider these kits as cheap insurance that I can keep a gun functioning if they ever crack down on parts (their aim is no gun parts except via FFL). I just want the security of knowing I have a rebuild kit if I ever need it.

This stuff is cheap now, but if panic and/or regulations ever gets going, that won't be the case. Just another way of preparing for a possible rainy day, or getting flood insurance cheaply.

I haven't done more than glance at their shotgun and handgun sections, but I'm intrigued by their "miracle" mainsprings for the S&W K-through-N frames. They say their spring may work as well as a custom trigger job.

The original EBR ban came about with the freedom-grabbers just browsing through a copy of the "Gun Digest". You can bet they're surfing the internet right now, coming up with a much more comprehensive list of things to be banned or controlled.

After you get your EBR, think next of magazines and ammo. Then think of reloading. Along the way, don't overlook the humble spring.

Good advice, WM! SirKit’s been thinking about that for a bit; even before Deval Patrick was elected Gov. here. We haven’t heard of any problems here yet, but then we haven’t gone looking for firearms yet, either. I do know that the local gun club is being sued for allowing folks to come in and shoot at their range, without having a license. In fact, we were going to stop in there sometime, until we found that out. We don’t own any weapons yet, and we wanted to be able to try before we bought. I think we may have to travel up to NH to do that, but even that state is becoming a Nanny State, likely because of all the MA folks who moved up there to avoid income taxes here.

I have a Mk 4, M3 10X 40mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil Dot with a brookfield mount on my M1A super match built up on TRW parts long ago. A system I have never been in doubt of in or out of the CONUS in harms way......I used my M1A’s for SMUD aka Small munitions disruption in EOD world and now in retirement use them for 4 or 2 legged vermin. The McBros stock and a harris BR-S bipod makes the rig perfect. Badger mounts on the scope as well as kill-flash lens covers under the BC Clear caps.

It is a fine tool, that has served me well in all conditions over the years in peace and war and I have no intention of ever giving it up. A steady diet of 168gr federal match for the most part since the last new hart barrel was installed. A good rig that will last me the rest of my life. The rifle has a sweet little place in a pelican case and that resides in a liberty fireproof gunsafe.

Tack Driver !

Good luck !

When I am asked too help folks get started with firearms I look at their location, their dwelling, their family and local laws etc ........

A new family will have children of course so I recommend that the Mom and Dad seriously consider a simple snub nose revolver that has had the magna trigger modification. That way if everything went wrong and the firearm was obtained by a young child they couldn’t use it . The triggers are locked unless the user is wearing a ring that has a magnet in it that unlocks the gun. The magnets can be put into a ring you already wear such as wedding rings etc so it is a natural thing and easy too use. A snub 357 or a 3 inch Model 65 / 13 can shoot inexpensive 38 special ammo or the 357 magnum ammo depending on the users skills and abilities . That suggestion would be for a new family / new firearm owners . Very easy handguns too operate and maintain but as with all new shooters GET TRAINING and join such a club that lets you get regular practice !

Too many folks will say tactical this or that , get an semi auto handgun and lost of spare mags yet a NEW owner or shooter needs too take baby steps with a viable self defense caliber first IMO and experience . As well as the training I mentioned.

I have no small kids living in the house these days yet I really like the magna-trigger mod as it makes the weapon useless if it is taken from me or picked up by an intruder if it wasn’t in my possession for some odd reason ! I gave em too my girls, my sister, my aunts and elderly Mom for just that reason. Made em all go through the CHL / CCW licensing process and I drag em all too the range once a month too shoot a box or two of ammo from their own firearms and then a family dinner ! They love it and enjoy the day and above all else are confident in their ability too use the tools as intended safely , every day ..........

Once that level is reached a shotgun would be next on the list of a small families self defense tools . Remington and Mossberg etc make a great pump shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge and there is as well the small double barrel shotguns that are very easy for even the smallest of men or women too use in 20 or 12 gauge .

I would hate too try and invade a home where I knew that Mom and Dad were armed with 2 handguns and a shotgun or two.........very minimal and basic self defense tools IMO.

As stated above ........Good Luck !

Stay safe !

So Big'ol took me to a marvelous concert last night: Rain - the Beatles Experience. They are a fantastic Beatles tribute band and their show was just amazing. They wear costumes that make them look pretty darn close to the Beatles at different stages in their career, have studied the voices and movements, and most importantly the musical techniques. Big ol' had us up pretty close to the front and I was amazed at watching the songs be performed. I guess I didn't have much appreciation for how amazing Paul's bass lines were. Wow! And I didn't really appreciate how much heavy lifting George did on guitar (us young'uns usually think of it being a John & Paul band...).

Anyway.... they're headed up to MA next and if you're looking for a nice summer evening, this is the ticket.
