VANITY: "Confusin-laws" ... My son is about to marry the cousin of his sister's husband.
4-26-08 | Jo Nuvark

The inlaws would like a word to help us define our relationships.

Is there a name for the relationship the parents have to each other?

We are more like sisters than inlaws. Explaining the marriages makes

your brain explode so we'd like to find a short name to tell the story

more succinctly.

My daughter is her brother's cousin in-law.

My son is his sister's cousin in-law.

My daughter's mother in law is her brother's aunt.

My son's mother in-law is his sister's aunt.

Brothers marrying sisters is pretty roomantic and special.
Yes, you were cheated out of a whole set of cousins, but
you were blessed as well.

Hey! I’m an engineer as well...

I'm not at all surprised; we know 'em when we see 'em. *\;-)

This one doesn't seem to actually lead to lots of confusion, if I have charted it correctly.

RPN calculator (my first). I win.

Did I mention I'm still using the solar-cell-powered scientific/programmer calculator I bought 22 years ago? Bonus points for:
1) getting my dollars' worth
2) off the grid
3) no batteries in landfill
4) Does hex (and octal and...)

Lose a point for:
1) It's not RPN...

(Sadly my circular sliderule disappeared decades ago, but still have a few of my grandfather's sliderules.)

What gave me away??

The plate hung over the entranceway. Dead giveaway.

my daughters married brothers (from another family). My grandchildren are double cousins. Funny thing is that the kids from each family don’t look alike.

I never used RPN...I have always swore by Casios like this one:

which is what I used to pass my EIT in 2007 (only 15 years after graduation...very long story.)

I do remember seeing some of my instructors in the General classes use their slide rules even in the mid-to-late 1980s.

I think my solar calculator is a Casio, the HPs having become history by one means or another. EIT -- it would be decades for me i I ventured in that direction but I'm now on a different career track that takes me away from day-to-day engineering.

Haven't had an RPN calculator in a long time, but am stuill quite comfortable with them.

Once the AF decided they didn’t need me around, I found myself needing a job. Somehow this engineering consulting firm thought I would be a good match for them, and now I am doing structural materials consulting for the CA DoT...but they said I MUST get my PE within 5 years. Not too bad, considering I didn’t have my EIT when they hired me.

Took the EIT on October 07 and passed it the first time out. I am already starting to work on my PE.

My paternal grandfather’s cousin, Tony married my mother’s aunt, Elizabeth. To my father growing up they were just Tony and Elizabeth. To my mother they were Aunt and Uncle. Their kids are my father’s second cousins and my mother’s first cousins. The kids had kids, (not with each other). Those kids are my second and third cousins at the same time. It gets confusing with big families.

my dad’s brother was married to my mom’s sister... there’s nothing strange about that except that my siblings and i were “cheated” out of a whole set of cousins... and so were my cousins...

There's a special phrase for that, 'double cousins'. Don't think of it as being cheated out of cousins, think of it as having extra siblings, because from a genetic point of view, your cousins might as well be your siblings. And nothing incestuous about it, either!

Actually, how do any in-laws introduce each other? There isn’t a word, really. People just say, ‘and this is my daughter-in-law’s mother.’

If anyone needs any more explanation than that, it’ll be because they’re good enough friends that you’re going more in depth.

‘My daughter-in-law’s mother..’ ‘..happens also to be my son-in-law’s aunt.’ I think it’s a kooky story and kind of funny and more power to ‘em. :)
