Theft of FR Identity
email | 4/18/08 | pabianice

Posted on 04/18/2008 6:00:43 AM PDT by pabianice

This morning I logged in to find 118 emails in my inbox. They were "returned mail for error" and each was a porno spam sent by someone using my FR email address. I have no idea how many were sent that reached someone succesfully. Is there someway to prevent/stop this? Thanks.

Either they have your password, or they used your address as their fake return address. Change your password to stop the first. I don’t think you can do much about the second.

It could be that someone else’s comuter has a virus- someone you sent mail to, or someone who has your address in the contacts folder. The virus sent mail from that other computer, using your address as a return.

So, when they bounce, they come to you.

I’d change the password right away.

There are apps that can extract data from the full header of an email, that may be informative.

Good luck!

Unfortunately the second is probably a lot more likely. I think the most likely scenario is that the email address was harvested off of someone's machine you've sent email to from that address by some kind of malware. You're probably going to have to abandon that address.

I didn’t know we had an FR email address.

Not in the Fawn@FR.com or anything like that. As far as I know, we just have the internal email: http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/mail-index

The Freepmail requires a valid FR screen name before you can send.

You have an FR email address?

We all do. It's been there for years.

Mine is corinstormhands@freerepublic.com. Yours is yourscreenname@freerepublic.com, etc.

In your profile you can set it up to forward to your outside address.

Same here. I always thought it was a feature just for FR communications.

I just tried sending email to ZX12R@freerepublic.com and it was returned. So, I think it is just internal mail.

Exactly which email system held the returned mail? FReep mail is completely internal to FR, no? If this was in your outside-world mail system, then it is as a poster said, someone spoofed your address.

Then, where is it, and how do you access it?
