Joe Paterno's storied coaching career could end on a sour note -- if he lets it.
Two members of Penn State's Board of Trustees yesterday told the Post-Gazette that negotiations regarding a possible contract extension or succession plan for Paterno have not gone smoothly.

If he does retire, or expire, it’s going to be hard to imagine college Football without him.
Sadly, there's no doubt that at this point he's a liability to the current program. The only question is whether he should be allowed to damage current teams as a courtesy due to past performance.
It would have to be someone with major stature to take that job.
Go ahead and ask JoePa to retire. And then you can join Nebraska and others in the annals of history as a FORMERLY great football school.
The guys a legend ... he needs to call it a day and retire gracefully. It requires a tremendous amount of stamina and drive to keep a successful college football program going ... Paterno's reputation has allowed him a wider window of opportunity (more years) than most good coaches get ... there's a point of diminishing return and he is well beyond that point. Paterno needs to wrap it up ...

Paterno seems like one of those college coaches who has really had his sport pass him by over the years.
I hope he does retire so Bobby Bowden will. Bobby’s not going ANYWHERE until JoePa does.
I heard Joe Pa calls half of his players by the wrong name.....players he remembers from twenty years ago> Bobby has been a slobbering fool for a few year...Bobby should have left six years ago.
But you know I’m right about BB not leaving until JoePa does...
I wouldn’t use nearly that strong language to describe BB, either.
that was harsh language.....they kept him around for recruiting purposes and it has not paid off lately.
JoePa has earned the right to go out on his own terms.
I’d have to disagree. They’ve had great recruits...they just aren’t playing up to potential. That is BB’s fault, IMO.
I think both men may be coaching in the grim reaper bowl soon.
They played in the DEPENDS bowl two years ago
