BTW, “copy” and “paste” don’t work in this case, because the cells I want reference on sheet 3 contain formulas.

You can use a sheet to sheet link. SheetName!CellID
I do it all the time.

Go to the cell where you want to put the value, type in “=”, surf to the cell you want, click on it, hit return.

Hit Autosum in the taget cell, surf to the cell you want, then hit Autosum again.

Are both spreadsheet in the same document? At the bottom you can right click "sheet 1" and add a Sheet 2 then transfer the data over. Then using the above posted language it will recognize the formula.
If it is on another xls doc, it's above my paygrade to solve that.

I don't know if this is what you are trying to do but in the cell on sheet3 that you want to combine data from sheet1 and sheet2 insert this
=Sheet1!B6+Sheet2!B6
