Many parents want a distinctive, appropriate, special-but-not-too-special name for their children, and 58 percent believe the right name contributes to success. Some would even pay people to help find a name.
Even with all the thinking that often goes into the decision, 3 percent of parents regret the names they chose and would change it if they could, according to a survey by BabyCenter.
They often said they would make a switch because a name has become too popular or gets mispronounced. A few parents felt that the name just doesn't seem to fit their child, the company said.
"Many parents view selecting a name for their baby as one of the most important and most difficult decisions they've ever made," said BabyCenter editor-in-chief Linda Murray. "Parents want to find a name that conveys their child's unique identity and will suit their personality throughout their lifetime."
Parents of boys said they wanted to convey strength and individuality, while femininity was the top concern for parents of girls.
Other findings included:
9 percent of new and expectant parents would pay someone to help them pick a name 48 said celebrities don't influence baby naming trends 26 percent said mom's vote has more weight than dad's when it comes to baby naming
People also said they look for different things in a first and middle name. The most important thing for a first name is sounding good, parents said. For a middle name, it was honoring a family member or carrying on a naming tradition.
However, 57 percent of parents said their kids are not named after anyone or anything in particular.
In December, BabyCenter released lists of the top 10 names for boys and girls.
It’s only a matter of time before someone names their kid “Swastika”.
See #160 - RedRightReturn one up’ed me! lol
Insurance guy in town. Richard Dick.
There’s nothing wrong with the name. I think “Wolfie” sounds funny. Wolfgang just seems more fitting for an adult rather than a little boy. Of course, all adults start out as children, LOL!
Orthodontist named Dr. Paine.
I am still fond of the names Raymond and Thomas Gunn. Can’t remember what their brother’s name was. Of course they were usually shortened...
Nairobia
Julisa
LaPrecious
Charisma
Dr. Teet.
She has the only account in the company using just a last name.
My daughter's company used first initial and first 3 letters of last name for network login. "c" and "lit" respectively. She got an exception to the policy pretty quick.
My middle name is J
It was cool when MIB came out.

I know of a child called “Strawberry.”
No....it’s not a girl.
It was a joke... I didn’t put the “/s off” under my post.
That's what I say!
-PJ
Classic!
Names some white people I know have - due to an incredibly diverse college environment, I have neither the time nor the energy to type up all my ethnic friends’ names:
-Ashtyn (her full name is only a couple letters off from Ashton Kutcher, but he’s younger than her so she jokes that he stole her name)
-Takarakoten (American Indian for ‘sunshine’, which is her nickname)
-Eowyn (she actually likes it)
-Vijaya (goes by ‘V’)
-Aurelian (a guy)
Personally, if I ever happen to have children, I want to give them names from mythology or ancient/classical literature - nothing really weird, but ones that are easy to pronounce and spell like ‘Freya’ or ‘Tor’. I have a popular name, and if I have children their names will hopefully not be popular.
One time I was in a Walmart (big surprise, I know) and this mother yelled out Aiden, Braden, Caiden, and Jayden, you need to shut the hell up. I busted out laughing for 5 minutes.
Oh gosh, some people provide great entertainment.
I think I’d avoid Dr. Paine.
Obstetrician in town.. First name Hyman.
My dentist, Dr. Weaker and Dr. Paler
My dentist is named Barber.
-Vijaya (goes by V)

At first I was reading this as Vajayjay.
(And I wouldn’t be too surprised if some poor kid named Vajayjay is out there someplace.)
