I used to work in refineries at random and out of those times I had to shut off my equipment and run to a "safe area" at least six times, not counting cracker start-ups where it is a known danger

Hydrogen leaks are generally not dangerous unless confined. The gas is much lighter than air and goes straight up unless it gets trapped somehow, then watch out.
