Actor-director Barry Morse of TV's 'The Fugitive' dead at 89

Actor-director Barry Morse, best known as the police detective in constant pursuit of Dr. Richard Kimble in the TV series "The Fugitive," has died in England at the age of 89.

His son, Hayward Morse, says his father died Saturday at University College hospital in London, where he had been living for a number of years. He says he was taken there Wednesday after he began experiencing blackouts and was falling down.

Morse established himself in London theatrical circles before emigrating to Canada in 1951. His career spanned seven decades and his website estimates Morse played more than 3,000 roles on radio, television, stage and in film.

Morse, who graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, also appeared on Broadway in "Hide and Seek," "Salad Days" and the lead of Frederick William Rolfe in "Hadrian VII".

Morse performed on and produced the half-hour CBC Radio series, "A Touch of Greasepaint," which ran for 14 years and "Barry Morse Presents" on television. He was also a one-time artistic director at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.

In 1963, he was hired by producer Quinn Martin to play Lieutenant Phillip Girard on "The Fugitive" - a series that ran four seasons and 120 episodes.

Why no mention of ‘Space 1999’, the best sci-fi show ever made with former cast members of ‘Mission Impossible’!

The show was never as good after he left, IMO.

Every week David Jansen completely outwitted this dumb cop. Hell, even Girard's boss kept him out of the office buy sending him all over God's half-acre and around the entire country to catch Dr Kimball.

By the way, I have a David Jansen Memorial link on my homepage. Girard would have been proud.

In all seriousness, RIP Barry Morse.

Indeed I do. Fondly. From The Fugitive and Space 1999. I am saddened. :(

Rumor: The original ending of The Fugitive.

We all know the relatively ordinary ending of The Fugitive.

Supposedly, the original ending was this:

Lt. Gerard was having an affair with Kimball’s wife and murdered her. The One-Armed Man had broken into the house to burglarize it and had witnessed the murder. Gerard pursued Kimball in order to prevent him from catching the One-Armed Man and possibly learning and revealing the truth.

The ending was supposedly scrapped when it was learned or guessed.

The Incredible Hulk TV show used this plot device as well with a reporter instead of a cop. Both were inspired by Les Miserables.

Isn't that interesting? Of course, YOU would pick up on that. :)

Wow, I thought he died years ago being the reason why he was not in season 2.

Wow, I thought he died years ago being the reason why he was not in season 2.

Back in the day I was a kid and had a subscription to Dynamite Magazine, remember that? And they had a write up on the second season of Space: 1999 and they said Victor was supposed to be written out of the show by way of a heart attack to make room for the new shape shifting character of Maya.

I haven't seen it since it first aired and haven't rented any of the DVD's so I have no idea of they even filmed but but I remember expecting to see Victor die in the first episode of the second season. Maybe someone who has seen the DVD's know if it is mentioned in the commentary or in a special feature or something.

Oh look! I found the cover!

I'm something of a Space:1999 geek.

Barry wanted off the show after Season One due to creative differences with Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (the creators and producers.) Add to that the hiring of Fred Freiberger (season 3 Star Trek producer), widely regarded as a hack of a producer.

When Season 2 of Space:1999 premiered, no mention was ever made of Victor Bergman (or Paul Morrow and David Kano, either.) New characters Tony Verdeschi and Maya were introduced.

But, in the novelizations of the show, it was mentioned that Victor had died after his spacesuit failed while he was on a mission. Supposedly a scene of this discussion between Commander Koenig and Dr. Russell was filmed, but cut.

Thanks for the info. Now that you mention it, it does seem vaguely familiar. I read some of the novels so maybe I read the one it was in.

IMO, the one with the spider monster in the graveyard of ships: Scariest. Episode. Ever!

"Dragon's Domain." It was fantastic.

I always wondered what he was looking into in that shot. Dang, I guess I’m going to have to pick up the DVD’s now. Getting all nostalgic and stuff.

OMG...that episode with the nasty tentacled monster scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid. I had bad dreams about it up until I was a teenager...
