GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (AP) -- As soon as he heard Johnny Podres had died, Don Newcombe recalled that famous moment more than a half-century ago.

"My mind went back to Yankee Stadium, 1955, the seventh game of the World Series," said Newcombe, also a member of that Brooklyn Dodgers championship team. "I thank God for Johnny Podres. I remember how confident he was in the clubhouse before Game 7. (Manager) Walter Alston called a meeting and Johnny said, 'Just give me one run.' Well, they gave him two, and we were champs. He was a man of his word, he lived up to his word, and I appreciate it."

Podres, who became a storied figure in Dodgers lore for pitching Brooklyn to its only World Series title before the team moved West, died Sunday at Glens Falls Hospital. He was 75. His wife, Joan, said he was being treated for heart and kidney problems and a leg infection...

Yankee Stadium, 1955, the seventh game of the World Series

It was a Tuesday afternoon. I was a (NY) Giant fan raised to hate the (Brooklyn) Dodgers, but I didn't care much for the Yankees either. Tuesday was the day for my Cub Scout Den Meeting. We all showed up and took a vote about whether to watch the game or not. I voted against watching. I'm not sure whether we wound up watching or not, but I've regretted my vote for a long time.

Great Dodger memories. That was before baseball became the game of mercenaries jumping from team to team.

Well Mr. Podres is up there with the biggest Dodgers fan of all, Our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.

You do know that Jesus was & is a Dodgers fan. :-]

I knew Sandy Koufax. Sandy Koufax was a friend of mine. Sandy, you’re no Johnny Podres.

Thanks for the ping. Seems to me that baseball is the epitmy
of Americana and a welcome balance to all the crappola in an election year. Looking forward to a hot season watching my Angels, win or loose.

Yes, on the way to the game, fellow Dodgers asked him, how many runs will we need to win? Podres answered, one. He went on to shut out the Yankess in a baseball thriller, 2 - 0. While I saw him pitch that game, I never met him, but I miss him. I do.

While I was a kid growing up in Richards mine in N.J. he came to the mines to be sponsor for one of my Buddy's conformation. He had a few of his Dodger team mates with him. I was ten yrs old and went 2 for 3 against him in a pickup game.

I am excited too for the baseball season - my diamondbacks ponied up and got a huge pitcher from Oakland and it’s going to be a great season!
