Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Perhaps Ed Brown should do DNA on the 18 month old.

Perhaps authorities realize they don’t have a clear picture of his background.

She could have been found dead in the house. A set up. Yeah, it’s a stretch, but. I hope Red & Co. have an eye on NCIS in other quarters...MARSOC, etc.?

The FBI site has added the third alias since last night.

Good to see you caught that.

Perhaps authorities realize they don’t have a clear picture of his background.

Doesn't sound like they do. Still, they are throwing a lot of rescources at finding him.

It appears he joined the Marines in September, 2004, prior to his marriage in 2005. As sopdoodle said, you can't become a citizen through marriage. So I'm wondering if he was already a citizen prior to joining.

I googled this - but the articles did not include details.

Cpl. Cesar A. Laurean, 21, of Clark County, Nev., joined the Marine Corps Sept.13, 2004, and was trained as a personnel clerk. Laurean was promoted to his current rank Sept. 2, 2006

Sheriff Brown said that he did not understand Military Justice...

That's smoke and mirrors.

He's an Onslow County native and has been Sheriff for nearly 20 years in the county wherein lie Camp Lejeune, Camp Geiger, and New River Air Station.

Ed Brown understands military justice. It's just that while NCIS thinks they're invincible, Brown knows he isn't...and isn't going to have it laid at his feet.

Wonder if he stole someone’s identity and he didn’t want his DNA to be checked against the CODIS data base.

And it’s strange how his wife has two surnames; Smith and Shifflet.

(putting tinfoil away)

Trying to catch up in the thread before dinner...I wasn’t clearly conveying that what I had typed was still a part of my summary from the tv. That said, I see what you are saying in reply, however to be technical, I think you mean that Maria made allegations. Charges were not yet filed. I don’t know the answer about how long someone has to wait at Camp Lejeune to have their allegations verified and charges brought forth.
