January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
My thoughts exactly. An ‘adoption’ gone bad...
This pervert reportedly has several aliases. I have several family members in the military and I do not feel good about foreigners or persons with a criminal background allowed to enlist.
**BUT is also says: Nationality: Unknown and Place of Birth: Unknown and Aliases: Cesar Gudino, Cesar Sanchez, Cesar Armando Laurean Ramirez***
Holy! This is our volunteer military?????????????
Might just as well say
Nationality: Saudi
Place of Birth; Islamic Mosque
Aliases: Hamzi, Hussein, Swahiri, Mohammed and Usama Bin Laden
How can someone of unknown nationality and place of birth, with at least four aliases, join the USMC? Are they that desperate nowadays? What happened to looking for “a few good men”?
Sounds like he is no stranger to the FBI...

I didn’t think they could.
Neighbor’s son - born in USA - 5th generation - enlisted just under the age limit - he was not accepted because of an old knee injury - even though his expertise would have been on a computer system.
Something’ ain’t right!
I think Brian noted he probably became a US citizen through marriage. Makes the most sense to me. It does seem like a stretch that the Marines don’t know his place of birth or nationality. Even his birth date is questioned on the FBI alert. Maybe his records have received increased scrutiny with the FBI involved, and they cannot verify what Laurean had given to the Marine Corps.
Sheriff Brown said at the outset that this was going to be bizarre - much more than a killing and a burial - and I am inclined to believe him.
Brown suggested Laurean may be getting help in his flight. "He's got friends out there, even though he's committed this horrible crime," Brown said. But he said he hoped Laurean would be in contact with his family and that his family would encourage him to surrender.
It appears that he married an American citizen.
Gee, do rape charges usually get put on hold until a child is born?
NO
A couple of years ago Senior Airman Ahmad al Halabi, a Syrian national in the US Air Force, was arrested for spying. Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, of Camp Lejoune, NC, faced desertion charges and other charges and allegedly was in contact with an Islamic group. There have been other cases that apparently failed to make the news.
Sheriff Brown said that he did not understand Military Justice and I am beginning to see why not... neither do I!
I think Sheriff Brown has a flare for being dramatic. The whole thing is already bizarre, though. I can’t think of a manhunt of this magnitude for a murder. Posting billboards, electronic billboards, etc. His picture is one of the most posted manhunt photos I can remember.
Given that the FBI already has a dossier on him there is the possibility that he can be tied to other open cases. If so, then the FBI certainly has reason to step up the manhunt.
Glad to hear this
You don’t become a US citizen through marriage - it just makes it possible to remain in the US as a permanent resident/legal alien and perhaps makes it easier to apply/obtain citizenship by naturalization.
Good find. Couldn’t see where it says he was born in Mexico, but I couldn’t view the image. It says he was married in 2005. Does anyone remember what his enlist date was?
