Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

On GretaWire a poster claimed the wife has disappeared.

Cannot confirm - but it doesn’t look good.

In court papers filed this week, authorities said the anticipated birth of the baby “might provide evidentiary credence to charges she lodged with military authorities that she was sexually assaulted.” Lauterbach reported the rape in April and was due to give birth in mid-February, authorities said.

Crystal Gutierrez of KDBC 4 News in El Paso says:

However the pregnant Marine never used the ticket. Which may be the reason local authorities were never called upon.

El Paso Police said they were never contacted. In fact, they found about the ticket today.

PREGNANT MARINE DESCRIBED AS FRIENDLY, BUT TOUGH

VANDALIA, Ohio (AP) _ The apparent death of a pregnant Marine has stunned her hometown friends, who described Lance Cpl. Maria Frances Lauterbach as friendly and polite but athletic and tough — a person who wouldn't be bullied.

Remains believed to be Lauterbach's were found Saturday in a fire pit in the backyard of a fellow Marine corporal, authorities said.

Her neighbors remembered her as vibrant.

"What I remember was her zest for living," said neighbor Kent Zimmerman. "She loved sports. Whatever the game in the neighborhood was, she was in it. She played at 110 percent. She always wanted to win, but she played fair."

Hi Rte! Good to read you, I think;) Agree with your description of a *deep* fire pit. Flames & smoke can be kept to a minimum - depending on fuel & cover.

Here we go again!
This is a messy case. Much blame on the Marine Corps for a slow, impotent, intra-company rape investigation. Maybe there’s a lot of activity within the Corps that the general public does not hear about and the DOD would prefer did not exist. These are young, sexually active men & women thrown together in close contact, who would just be fired or arrested (Duke Three)on the outside.

I give up!

Lauterbach met with military prosecutors last month to discuss pursuing rape charges against Laurean, said Kevin Marks, supervisory agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service at Camp Lejeune. He said military prosecutors believed they had enough evidence to argue that the case should go to trial.

In court papers filed this week, prosecutors said the anticipated birth of the baby "might provide evidentiary credence to charges she lodged with military authorities that she was sexually assaulted. "Lauterbach reported the rape in April and was due to give birth in mid-February, authorities said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Authorities said they had not been concerned that Laurean would flee because they had information he and Lauterbach carried on a "friendly relationship" even after she reported the assault to military authorities. There is no indication Lauterbach asked the military to protect her after she leveled the rape allegations, investigators said.
Oh, yeah, an Article 32 sure is a clear signal that someone's on friendly terms.
It wouldn’t necessarily be the Marine Corps at fault here.
I really haven’t followed this one much to know the ins and outs or details, so don’t have much more to comment on it, except how sad it is.
Wish we knew more about the baby and who its father is. At least with Laci and several other murdered pregnant women, the babies were already named and “known” - they were *people* as well as being “fetuses.”
In this case, it doesn’t sound like N.C. recognizes unborn babies as people who can be murdered. I’m surprised that a southern state wouldn’t have such a law, when someplace like CA does.
The murdered girl’s uncle said that the father of her baby was the guy who raped and killed her. So sad and unnecessary - she reported the rape in April of 2007. The guy was not even considered a flight risk until he disappeared at 4:00 AM yesterday.
OK, so she kept seeing him after the rape? I know they said that, but also said she had a mental illness, too.
If she was 8½ months pregnant as of Dec 14th, when she “disappeared,” as some accounts say, that would have put her due date around New Year’s. But, some articles say she was due Feb 15th.
I thought the assault happened in early March. That would’ve made her due a few weeks before she “disappeared” and she wouldn’t have been 8½ months pg.
If it did happen in April just before she reported it, then she would’ve been due about now, right? But she was most likely killed a month ago. Sorry I’m confused because I’ve heard differing accounts and haven’t sat down to find the truth until now.
Is it “assumed” that the rape caused the conception?
That is what the news reports are saying.
The report was that she reported the rape in April but that it happened in March. She was afraid to report it.
OK, I think I “get it” now. And my own math was off a bit, so March must be right. She had to be *very close* to delivering, it would seem - but she did have another pre-set Dr appt for 12/26, which, of course, she didn’t make.
Thanks!
