January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
**I doubt this was his first crime..**
Not sure. He must have had a clean record & psych profile to get into the Marines. He married young and is still only 21.
I had doubts about the *rape* charge (still Nifonging). Was thinking perhaps Maria was challenging him to step up and admit responsibility for her pregnancy...or else. She was 3 months pregnant before the MPO.
Anyhow, that’s moot - because not only is he capable of adultery and rape - but murder.
Looks like the burn ban wasn’t lifted until about the 2nd.

Yep....
Maybe he did it at night so most of the odors would have dissipated by the morning.
I may be giving him too much credit. It does sound like his wife is just as guilty (as in how did the dead woman’s car make it from his house to the bus station?)
A bloody mess to clean up is a bloody mess and a bugger to clean up, as well as painting isn’t quick job either. So I don’t she wasn’t aware of that either.
And holding on to the ‘letter’ this long. And VOILA! Now hubby is gone.
Then how in the heck did he get away with a fire that had to be that big during a burn ban?
‘round here, people tattle, QUICK!
I will venture this:
Christina is going to use the Battered Wife Syndrome. She complied with his demands under threat of death - and he obviously is a killer.
There was probably a part of her that wanted Maria dead - but once the heat was on - she probably came up with the suicide note and a way to get Laurean out of the house.
Only if you have smelled burnt human flesh before, sadly I have and there is no really describing it, but the best that I could describe it as is that it smells of flint.
Love your tag-line.
Thanks for your good work!
BBL - time for supper;)
Well, they said earlier that they were about to search a burning pit. Many people have a place to repeatedly burn brush. He could have thrown the body under a large pile of brush, especially fresh pine, soaked it in gasoline, and lit it. The burning pine would be strong in itself, and to the casual neighbor or passer-by, would not look abnormal, especially if on a weekend.
“The fetus was developed enough that the little hand was about the size of my thumb,” Brown said. “The little fingers were rolled up, and this is consistent with what we were looking for, a pregnant lady who is the victim, Maria Lauterbach, and her unborn child.
“As well as I could see, the body was much charred,” Brown added. “The fetus was in the abdominal area of that adult. ... That is tragic, and it’s disgusting.”
North Carolina law does not allow for murder charges to be filed in the death of an unborn child.

It is the brutality of the crime that has me shocked. At the least Cesar Armando is a sociopath, might have had a history that has remained hidden (abusing animals).
That is the the bad part re: Nifong & Crystal. This prostitute lied about rape and no charges against her. She caused harm to real victims.
I’ll tell you what. Sheriff Ed Brown said this case is going to become bizarre. Mark these words.

Don't know if he can or will, but I believe Sheriff Brown has the authority to investigate the NCIS and Camp Lejeune's actions in this case.
Only if he can find the accused rapist first.
True. But between the ban & the smell it seems like somebody had to have at least noticed it.
I’ve heard of MYOB but this is ridiculous.
Surely they knew the grave would be found? This is bizarre..
It's going to get even more bizarre if we can't find the husband. Maybe he's dead too.

Sorry, but I haven’t followed much of anything on this but was wondering if the RAPIST is the IMPREGNATOR or is there a HUSBAND (doubt it) or have they not said either way?
Don’t know how to put this, but a fire pit is used to roast things like cabrito or feral hog, with burning coals put in the pit first (done somewhat as you describe), then the meat, then a cover of dirt.
There wouldn’t be any “fire” aboveground, as such. No flames or much smoke.
Also, here in my city, a guy BBQ’ed parts of his GF out on a regular BBQ pit in an apartment complex, out in the open on his patio - and people smelled it, but just thought it was a little “different” and didn’t report it. No one knew about it for days.
