Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

The wife is cooperating with the sheriff’s office, they say.

As of 2:16 PM EST:

Remains of adult and fetus found in Marine's yard ^

Investigators have found today the remains of an adult and a fetus that could be those of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach and the baby she was carrying when she disappeared in mid-December.

The discovery came on the second day of the excavation of a cavity in the Onslow County back yard of Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, and his wife, Christina S. Laurean. Lauterbach had accused Laurean of raping her in April.

A nationwide search has begun for Cesar Laurean, 21, who is described as a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes. He weighs about 160 pounds. He drives a black 2004 quad cab Dodge pickup, license plate number TRR 1522.

***I see nothing wrong with mandatory birth control of some sort.***

I’ll take *some sort*;) Because it is apparent that where sex is concerned - nobody is willing to go cold turkey.

Military could simply include a clause in the contract. If women get pregnant they are honorably discharged.

Should be a clause for men - no out of wedlock paternities or they will be discharged for conduct unbecoming. That’ll stop pre-marital & extra-marital sex - good for the kids and good for morale.

So tragic.

That removes one of my theories. (Coercion for custody).

I’m a bit twisted, but I was curious...

http://www.slate.com/id/2162676

Has a good description of all the different smells that come off of a burning human body. I was surprised, because no, it doesn’t all smell like a burnt roast....

IOW, there was enough funk in the air to alert someone.

The truck is registered to Laurean’s father.

And other surprise is that the property isn’t that obscured or so big that events could have been easily hid from the neighbors. Looks like the kind of house that you can hear the toilet flush from the outside.

Some of these reporters asking questions are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Thanks for pics.

The fence was more than adequate for his crime.

I second your comments.

Things have been said Maria. I would like to hear more about the rapist's background. This is so terribly gruesome that I doubt this was his first crime, maybe first time he was caught.

**IOW, there was enough funk in the air to alert someone.**

Was it really cold in NC over Christmas? Perhaps most of the neighbors were out of town on holiday or at work when Laurean burned her remains. He probably had impeccable timing - and a good excuse ready if anyone asked questions.

I live in the boonies and most of my neighbors around have 2 to 5 acre tracks. You could maybe do it here, but folks would still see a lot of smoke.....and smells do carry.

And didn’t NC have a burn ban going? I mean, it must have just ended, but we couldn’t burn out of doors here for the longest. I bon fire in the back yard would have been an attention drawer.

Thanks. I’m quiet eager to hear why she was expected to be discharged.

Right, if it happened on the 20th-ish, he could have waited until the weekend of the 22nd, a Saturday and most folks were on the road. Even better, started the fire at night.

The area looks rural, but still there are plenty of homes around. I would doubt all were traveling.
