Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Whoa, and he killed Maria, covered the walls with blood, and he got the home all nice and tidy and painted before she got home. Sure, the wife didn't know a thing until the 10th of Jan. /s

This was so contrived..

I would think payment for human trafficking is done in person, not by wire. Too much risk of loss.

..unless they had the baby already - depends on the date...and who then are the parents of the baby found in the grave with Maria?

It could be just that simple.

I figured she went while he did more cleanup. Being at the party was her alibi for Dec. 15th. But why wouldn’t they both go and have an alibi for at least the 15th?

Christina's father is not very chatty as of late...

http://www.fayobserver.com/article_ap?id=116508

"...Laurean asked his wife whether she was "with him on this" as they headed to the attorney's office, according to the affidavit. She responded: "I do not know. Is there anything you have not told me?" That's when Laurean told her what had happened, the affidavit states.

Bruce Shifflet, Laurean's father-in-law who lives outside of Prospect, Ohio, declined to comment. Lauterbach family attorney Chris Conard and Lauterbach's uncle Pete Steiner, who has served as family spokesman, did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Authorities said Thursday they may have recovered the weapon used to kill Lauterbach, although they declined to say who gave them the item last weekend and what it was. Prosecutors have said an autopsy failed to answer all the questions about Lauterbach's death, including whether she gave birth before her death and of the identity of the father.

Authorities believe Lauterbach was killed around Dec. 15. Marine officials have said they attempted to find her after she failed to report to work on Dec. 17, but had evidence _ including a note left for her roommate in which she wrote she was tired of the Marine Corps lifestyle _ that led them to believe she left on her own.

NCIS apparently doesn’t consider the wife a flight risk, either.

I watched Nancy Grace and it made me sick when it was reported how painful Maria’s death was and that Cesar Armando Laurean held a barbecue on top of the bodies. The baby also must have been in great pain. And his family in this country is not cooperating. A sick family.

Hey all !! My name is Becky ... I have been reading this thread since the beginning and LOVE some of the questions brought up concerning this case.

Isn’t is possible the wire transfer was to help with the accumulating lawyer bills ?? It seems as they Laurean had many appointments = lots of $$

Hi and welcome to FR! That’s what I thought, too - probably for legal bills.

I assume that some legal services are reimbursed by the USMC.

Welcome to FR, beckayellowsno. That’s another possibility, lawyer fees. I’m not sure I believe he was meeting with lawyers all that much. That’s what he told his commander. If this was a civilian lawyer, yes, he would have to pay them. If these were JAG’s, no, he wouldn’t pay anything. I’m assuming if they were off-base, they were civilian, but I really don’t know.

Welcome;)

Great question - keep contributing - some of us are veterans from the Anna Nicole Smith threads which were/are also dedicated to a search for facts and desire for justice.

Not sure if our conversations have any influence - but the exchange of perspectives is enlightening.

There are a lot of questions that haven't been answered about the events in this case. I think a critical question comes down to when Maria was killed.

The roommate, Durham, said Maria was not that mobile due to her pregancy. Durham indicates he saw her car before he left for work (time?), but found the note from her once he returned from work (time?).

Christina says Maria was killed on the 15th. So where did Maria spend the night on the 14th? Friends would have come forward. She could have stayed in a hotel on the 14th, but why? Why not go back home?

If Christina says Cesear helped Maria buy a bus ticket on the 15th, what does help mean? If Maria had taken out $700, she had cash to buy the ticket. So if it wasn't financial, was it that she needed physical help because of her pregnancy? Which leads back to the unanswered question, where did Maria spend the night on the 14th?

If Maria was killed on the evening of the 15th while Christina was at the party, how could Cesear dispose of the body, clean up well enough all the blood stains so that Christina wouldn't notice, and move the car? That's too small of a window especially if the man is panicked and stressed.

Who took the car to the bus station? She had to drive it to the house. Did he drive it, then get a taxi back?

Christina saying the killing happened on the 15th is just too convenient. It sounds contrived after the fact, learning what had been reported in the press, as establishing an alibi.

Oooooh, I wish I had known about this site during the Anna Nicole saga !! Here are some other thoughts I have had:

a: my husband and I are both reservists(Marine corps and Air guard respectively) .. we have both spent almost two years on active duty. I know from experience that squadron and/or command parties are sometimes held at off base locations(i.e hotels) to allow those who are too intoxicated a place to sleep for the evening without having to drive drunk. I know everyone is quick to assume Christina was involved(I don’t trust her either) .. but isn’t it possible their babysitter “cancelled” or Cesar claimed he was sick, and Christina decided to go without him since they had paid for tickets?

b: If Christina WAS at the Christmas party, does this mean their daughter was home at the time of the crimes ? I understand she is only 18 months old, but I would think some sort of counselor or wellness check could tell if she was witness to a violent crime ? Children are known to show fear, anger, etc after experiencing something so horrific.

New article on WRAL:

Fugitive Marine to Be Featured on 'America's Most Wanted'

Quote in the article is not new but bears repeating:

"He became scared, took her body to a wooded area adjacent to his residence, and buried her. He obtained legal counsel and explained the facts to them. He was told that he was facing the death penalty," Dubois wrote.

If she committed suicide, why would his lawyers say he was facing the death penalty?

Hi everyone, Lyn here...been lurking and reading all week trying to get onboard.

I have noticed some inconsistencies in Christina’s time-line of events.
“ She says the party was on the 15th, when the Marines said the party was the afternoon of the 14th...they all got off work at noon so they could attend.... which Maria did not attend.”

I don’t know about the Marines, but with my sons brigade (Army), they are provided childcare for these events...that is if the children are not invited. Although for their Christmas party the children were invited.

Another snipit....heard a clip just once yesterday that America’s Most Wanted has a video clip of Cesar visiting a Lowe’s home improvement store buying paint...will air on their show.

Someone asked about pics of Christina, during the parents interview on Monday they showed a video clip of her and the pic of them together...but can’t find it now. Her maiden name is different from her Moms. Listed on the blueline link as Smith and 25, they also had info on marriage license. I have tried to find high school info etc, but to no avail.

Lyn

Welcome to FR! Excellent! Did they say what the date was? I knew that there would be video from either a Home Depot or a Lowe's!
