January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
The USMC viewed him as an outstanding Marine. They should now be scrutinizing his entire work record and contacts. I'll wonder what powerful friends he has south of the border.
***I don’t think most Americans will think this one loser has anything to do with the rest of the military.***
I hope that’s true. But this case is still disturbing to any parent with a daughter in military service - taking note that a rape charge was leveled, followed by the murder of the accuser.
Murder seems like a complete overreaction to the given problem of Maria...the idea that Cesar is up to other things, by virtue of his position in the personnel office, that Maria knew about (even more serious than rape) keeps nagging at me.
I mean...Cesar and Christina seem to have slid along with a murder coverup just fine....what’s a little adultery to them?
Yes, the Marines referred to him as a “stellar” Marine. But that was on the job. They had no idea what he was up to off-duty. Maybe he was just fine before the involvement with Maria. Maybe he just snapped the night he killed her.
His “powerful friend” in Mexico is the extradition agreements they have with the US. In the latest article in JDNews, they indicated Mexico won’t extradite him if he faces the death penalty. In 2001, the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that life in prison was cruel and unusual punishment. A defense atty that was questioned indicated he might face 40 years if they wanted to get him back to North Carolina.
****Murder seems like a complete overreaction to the given problem of Maria..****
That is such a profound observation.
I suspect most of the participants on this thread are women. Being a mother, I am having a difficult time coming up with a motive...other than sociopathic rage (Scott Peterson) or betrayal & jealousy (Christina).
There’s the loss of career for a rape charge that seemed very weak.........but murder? Not even a large insurance policy.
Laurean's in-laws, Bruce and Debby Shifflet, told The Early Show that their daughter Christine spoke with Laurean. They say she asked him to turn himself in for the sake of the family.
"He said, he didn't want to go to the pen for this," Bruce Shifflet told The Early Show. "He was remorseful, but he left anyway."
Not swallowing much that is hearsay from Christina. She made sure Cesar was long gone and voiceless before coming *clean*.
Everything attributed to her has been self-serving and unbelievable.
(I have to get a life)

Maybe we should let Mexico have him. See how long he lasts there. Let wifey go down for it. If he cares he will come back. But 40 years isn’t even close. If there was ever a death penalty case this is it.
I’m still wondering if he is even alive.
Does anyone have the links to the aerial photos of the house and lot? I don't remember woods behind the house. Just wondering...
Oh darn. There's a way that could have been avoided.
I still find it interesting the in-laws are so chatty.
I don't recall reading whether this was a handwritten note, or a typewritten note. Does anyone know?
Yes, but both men and women have been known to kill their spouses instead of getting a cheap (by comparison) divorce. Sometimes people will kill for little things.
Yes, do you see trees? I do not. Looks like barren sandy soil.
That’s what it looks like to me too.
***....known to kill their spouses instead of getting a cheap (by comparison) divorce...***
I would agree if Laurean’s wife was dead....
There are of course many cases of men who kill the women who reject them....
That might be how Cesar Laurean viewed Maria’s reaction to his advances - & when her conception date was *off*. Was Maria claiming to have another man in her life and Laurean *snapped*????
Oh the possibilities - and the tragedies - for an unborn child and a 2 year-old girl in Camp LeJeune.
Try google earth.
