Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

Posted on 01/11/2008 9:43:08 AM PST by Pyro7480

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

“I believe Cesar Laurean, a personnel clerk, was not the bossiest, brightest bulb in the Laurean home. The person who appears to have taken charge, purchased the bus ticket, dropped the car at the bus station etc., etc., I think the Take Charge wife - said “run Cesar, run” and he did. Leaving her to fashion all self-serving stories and alibis.”

Consider the CNN interview with the woman who purported to work in their office. She give Laurean credit for being another “McGyver”. Sounds like a friend of Christina’s pinning the brains and therefore the ability of Cesar to come up with a complete Maria killing and escape plan. I thought her interview was worthless except to further prejudice in the case.

****He may be dead.
Considered that to be a distinct possibility myself.****

When was the last time anyone (other than the missus) actually saw a living, breathing Cesar Laurean? According to the Marine Corps timeline; Jan 8th was the last date Laurean’s OIC was physically with him. Thereafter his OIC had only phone contact - so what was the location(s) of his phone call(s)?

The last time somebody logged into Cesar's myspace account was Jan 5, 2008.

The affidavit states Laurean's wife said she and her husband went to an attorney's office on the morning of January 10, and while on the way, her husband asked her "If she was with him on this." She says she told him "I don't know. Is there anything you have not told me?"

If true, there is much more to this statement, IMO.

I wonder if Laurean wanted his wife to flee with him.

Wonder if the attorney will verify that he met with either of them. Supposedly, Cesear was not going to work, meeting with attorneys since the afternoon of Jan. 8th (I believe). I wouldn’t take the wife’s word at this point that he was still at home unless someone else verifies seeing him.

One interesting thing about the cell phone search warrant, is that the wife, Christina, says she knew about the rape allegations since May and about the pregnancy in July. So that question’s been answered (if you can believe the wife).

Congressman Asks Mexican President For Help In Catching Laurean

Posted: 2:49 PM Jan 17, 2008

Last Updated: 2:57 PM Jan 17, 2008

A North Carolina congressman today urged the Mexican president to help with the search for Corporal Cesar Laurean.

In his letter, Congressman Walter Jones urges President Felipe Calderon to use whatever resources are available in Mexico to help find Laurean as quickly as possible. Jones also asks that if Laurean is caught in Mexico that authorities return him to Onslow County to face charges.

The Marine corporal is wanted for killing Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach and burying her body in his backyard.

Laurean, who was born in Mexico, is a naturalized U.S. citizen. The FBI now believes Laurean has fled to his native country where he still has family.

Jones represents the third congressional district, which includes Onslow County and Camp Lejeune.

The neighbor, Wanda Alander, says she believes the wife is in on it.

Did Maria have something else on Cesar and/or his wife?

I remember reading that a neighbor said they had burned three times that they could remember: 12/24, 12/25, and I think New Year’s. Also remember reading that BOTH were in the back yard burning something on one of those occasions (not just him).

According to the search warrant, Christina says he told her that he buried the body in some woods behind the house. Was that to give her cover so she could say, I had no idea we were burning the bodies right at my feet?

Same thing with the Dec. 15th date. If Maria was killed on the 14th and Christina had no alibi of working, being out of town, whatever on that date, that would be a problem. If they say the evening of the 15th when Christina wasn’t there, problem solved. The authorities are saying they think Maria was killed on the 14th, not sure why. Wonder what Christina’s schedule was that day?

***The neighbor, Wanda Alander, says she believes the wife is in on it.***

Shep is so annoying - his questions are always rhetorical -he should have just let Ms.Alander talk & offer her own straightforward opinions.....*Cesar quiet...she mostly inter-acted with the wife* who was the painting enthusiast.

That seems to indicate that Cesar did not control the wife.

Well, I’m glad Congressman Jones is writing a letter. Maybe he should also lobby Pres. Bush to have a little talk, put a little pressure on the Mexican Pres. to get his Marine back. He is his COC.

I am still stunned at how big and public this manhunt has become. It’s quite unusual when you think that quite a few other women (even pregnant women) have been murdered in the US. I’ve never seen this much effort put into a hunt.

I don’t know but I do think the wife knows much more.

She stated she knew about the rape charge and Maria was pregnant.

She was painting the house ... she had to see blood splatters, IMO.

She was at some point aware Maria was dead and the body was buried.

Maybe the note that Laurean left was to provide his wife cover.

Quite plausible ...

The search warrant applicant shows three phone numbers that authorities are interested in for the dates of Dec. 1 to Jan. 12: Cesear, Christina and Cesear’s mother, Elvira. The first page indicated a search was made on Cesear’s only (the 361 prefix). Is that the way you guys read it?

Sounds like a good time for LE to take Mrs. Laurean into custody.

I am sure there are hundreds of manhunts in progress...just that this case is front-page and we are following every twist & turn.

It’s unusual, spooky and the first reporting reflected terribly on the USMC.

Especially horrible for all parents and relatives with young men & women serving with honor and distinction in our military.

Maggie, the wife's parents were on TV on the 14th I think. This article on Jan. 14, cbsnews references their comments on the Early Show.

Sodpoodle, re. Especially horrible for all parents and relatives with young men & women serving with honor and distinction in our military.

I don't think most Americans will think this one loser has anything to do with the rest of the military. He is one bad apple. I was just surprised at how public it is. It could be the military (more specifically NCIS) was embarassed at how this originally made them look. So maybe they pushed other federal agencies (FBI and US Marshalls) to go hot and heavy in the search

Are we naive to believe that he is an aberration in our revered Marine Corps? What is the discharge rate for guys & gals who don’t measure up to the USMC’s standards?

If he was in the Personnel office - guess he knew how to game the system.

Interesting.
