WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs resigned as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, the Associated Press has learned.

A person familiar with Gibbs' decision, speaking on condition of anonymity because the news had not been officially announced, said Gibbs would make his resignation known later Tuesday morning and would discuss it at 3 p.m. news conference.

Paul Brown was one of the greatest coaches in AAFC/NFL history when he coached the Browns, but did poorly with the Bengals.

Yes, he was a good coach and th egane is better because of him.

Personally I think losing Sean Tayler the way they did took the heart right out of him. It would me. And I’m far from a Skins fan but I have always admired Joe Gibbs.

Or Cowher. I thought if Gibbs waited another year (or pre Sean Taylor) the current regime did not make the playoffs this year) Cowher would have been the guy.

Yep. As a Redskins fan since the early 1980s, this is really sad news for me. I remember well living in northern Virginia during the heyday of the Skins’ run, and the incredible love that the DC area has for the Redskins. My biggest regret in three years living up there is that I never found a way to see a game in RFK Stadium.

Joe Gibbs is an innovator, a great coach, but most importantly, a class act and a wonderful human being. I hope he enjoys his retirement—and maybe he can get his racing team back in the winner’s circle!

As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I sure hate to see Joe Gibbs leave. Even though the Redskins beat my
Boys, I really couldn’t feel bad losing to Gibbs. As others have posted, he was and is a class act. He was one of the few head coaches you didn’t feel bad losing to. Losing to the Redskins, yeah, but not to Joe. He did a wonderful job in DC and he deserved better. Good luck to Dan Snyder in getting a suitable replacement. He’s going to need it. How long will Gibbs’ successor stay in DC? That depends on Snyder.

Joe Gibbs, you did the Redkins (and the NFL) good. Have a nice rest of your life.

In the second half in the Philadelphia game, Washington burned a time out to avoid a delay-of-game penalty on a 4th-and goal at the 6 yard line while setting up for a field goal.

In the second half, I think I would rather have 4th-and goal at the 11 yard line, and keep a time out.

I’m from Baltimore. I loathe and despise everything and anything Redskin. EXCEPT Joe Gibbs. He is decency personified. I always wondered in the 80s how he managed to work for Jack Cooke, and was astonished these last few years that he could put up with Danny. Coach Gibbs is one of the best guys in the NFL ever.

There’s persistent rumors that the Panthers are going to look hard at Cowher, because he lives here in North Carolina. I don’t know if Cowher would want the job, though—the Panthers are a complete mess right now. I honestly don’t know how they managed to pull out what they did this season, considering their quarterback situation, lack of receiver talent beside Steve Smith, and the fact that their best defensive player (Julius Peppers) was MIA the whole year.

I work around the corner from JoeGibbs racing where he does the final build on his NASCAR cars.

...I was wondering what all the commotion was over there.

Didn’t see this one coming. He probably goes back to NASCAR fulltime to keep busy. One of the real NFL good guys.

I thought Joe Gibbs was going to stick around one more season after the way the team rallied in December to get into the playoffs.

This year has been a grind, even without the Sean Taylor murder.

“I liked Chris Hamburger “55” great line backer.”

I have his autograph somewhere. My Dad got it back when Hanburger was running a Ford dealership.

You never know with Snyder. He could dangle enough cash at Cowher if he really wants him.

Probably Greg Williams, would be my guess.

This is a real bummer for any Skins fan.
