Anti-Mormons Attacks Must Stop, FR is Better Than That (Vanity)
December 12 2007 | jveritas

Posted on 12/12/2007 6:27:59 PM PST by jveritas

Dear FRiends

It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the “freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.

I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.

I’ve got my own opinions on Mormonism (which I will keep to myself), but Mormons themselves are for the most part decent and honorable people. Except the one in charge of the Senate.

I agree but their doctrine does bother me. The teaching that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers in the beginning is really troubling; that takes away from the Deity of Christ.

Yes, it is a slanderous and hateful opinion, from which decent people recoil.

It's an opinion that you do not agree with. It is not a VICIOUS ANTI-MORMON ATTACK

What was a personal attack was what I quoted that was said to me. I was accused of hating Mormons because I dared to say that the Constitutional clause about no religious test had nothing to do with individuals applying any test they wanted to.

For the record, I most emphatically do not hate Mormons or anyone else, nor do I slander anyone's religion.

“Personally I’d just like to have a candidate (Mormon, Atheist, Jew, Jehovah’s Witness, Agnostic, whatever) who was not afraid to answer any question posed to him and didn’t get offended if people questioned some bizzare of his unique religious beliefs. Romney’s religion is probably the most important thing in his life. For that reason alone we need to know exactly what he believes that may be different from mainstream christianity.”

Yeah right. You don’t pass the smell test. You want to make this all about religion. You think somehow that Romney will MORMONIZE the country much like bigots thought Kennedy would CATHOLOGIZE the country. Take a walk.

That is his impact on the public. At best you should only be attacking him for being hypocritical to his faith because that shows character. NOT attacking his faith to get at him unless you seriously think that something unique to his faith will tranfer over to his public policy.

How about this:

The Mormons have a secret temple ritual. Mormons give (or at least did when Romney was first given the temple ceremony) a blood oath not to reveal to anyone what is said, done or promised in that temple ceremony. Now Romney has kept this secret for his whole life and we can expect that he will continue to keep whatever was said, done or promised a secret from everyone on pain of having his throat slit, and his bowels scattered over the countryside.

There are also taught a whole slew of secret handshakes which have secret meanings.

Now maybe all this is harmless, but the fact is that we don't know what promises Romney made in his temple ritual. For all we know he promised to follow the instructions of the Prophet of the Mormon church to the letter if he were ever called upon by the Prophet to make some decision or effect some policy which the Prophet of the LDS church might call upon him to do.

We simply don't know what took place in the Mormon temple between the LDS Church and Romney and he is prohibited from telling anybody about it.

Maybe that's irrelevant. Maybe everything that goes on in those secret temple rituals is harmless. Maybe it isn't. But I think it is an issue which is going to come up should we nominate Romney as president.

Mormonism has a lot of baggage. It's historical discrimination against blacks (BTW some of my Mormon relatives were (in private) some of the most virulent bigots I have ever met in my life), the polygamy thing, the men can become gods thing, the Mountain Meadow Massacre. All these things are going to be exploited by Hillary's underground minions and she is going to portray herself as the true Evangelical Christian candidate in the race.

My prediction is that Romney will get the nomination. I will vote for Romney for president provided that he doesn't choose Giuliani as his running mate. I also believe that Romney's religion is going to be an albatross around his neck and it may sink his candidacy. I think it is important that we air this laundry. If that makes me a bigot, then I guess I'm proud to be a bigot. If getting the truth out (regardless of who it offends) is bigotry in action, then we need more of it.

I am asking you to set aside your prejudices and judge Romney on the only area that should concern you. That is his impact on the public.

MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN

To borrow a phrase. My objections to Governor Romney are not his religion. I have found him wanting in sincerity and believability. I have found him wanting in a consistant Conservative world view. I have found him wanting in the area of having a spine, something Republicans need now more than ever. If he believed one way and spouted something different for so long, how is he better than the Congresscritters that we so often rail against?

"I just found some gold tablets out back and am starting a new religion based on em. I hope I’ll get the same tolerance myself."

Its no less plausible than the "God spoke to me and only me and I wrote it down for you" origin of much of the Bible.

Name for me one thing Romney did in the public sphere that is uniquely mormon(good or bad). Come on. Stop dodging. BTW my faith is silly in believing in the transubtantiation of the body of Christ during communion.

If we criticize Romney on his religion, then we may as well condemn Obama for being black, and Hillary for being a woman.

Now that statement is a bit ridiculous. You have no control over what race or gender you are, but you do have control over your ideology.

And Mitt has chosen the liberal ideology all his life until his very recent conversion to conservatism.

How handy is that with the Republican primaries coming up, where many, if not most voters are conservative? We called it flip flopping when John Kerry did it and it's flip flopping when Mitt does it.

Should Mitt win the Republican nomination you may count on one thing, he will flop back leftwards. His natural position.

There are 3 good candidates in this race, Mitt Romney is not one of them.

Several of the Founding Fathers were Masons, and they too, “had secret rituals”, oooh.

“Secret handshakes with secret meanings” - are you for real? That’s something that some pimply faced, paranoid truther would post on DU.

[On Oct. 27, 1838, Missouri Gov. Lilburn Boggs issued an extermination order, directing that Mormons be driven from the state or exterminated. By 1839, virtually all Mormons had been driven from the state.]

This is exactly the kind of half assed history that needs to be debated on Free Republic and NOT censored. You darn well know that Sydney Rigdon’s “Salt Sermon” to the Danite Mormon vigilantes contained an anti-Gentile extermination order PRIOR to Gov. Boggs order. And you very well know that the Mormons went on a rampage burning through Davies County after Rigdon and Smith incited the burning of Gentile towns. And you very well know that there was a battle at Crooked River where the Mormons ambushed a state militia troop. And you very well know that at Far West, the entire defending camp of 1000 Mormons could have been “exterminated” BUT WERE NOT!

And the reason they WERE NOT exterminated was in part because Smith was coerced or cajoled into surrendering, because he would have let his whole congregation die. And the other reason there was no extermination carried out, was because Bogg’s order WAS CONSIDERED DEFENSIVE, and despite the animosity of Gentiles who had been burned out, the State Militia General in charge just wanted the Mormon followers freed from being led like sheep by the megalomaniac Smith. In fact, if there was a true extermination order in place from Boggs, Joseph Smith, Sydney Rigdon, Parley Pratt, and a bunch of others would have been executed instead of being sent to Liberty jail.

But of course, the Anti-Gentile groups of Mormon apologists here such as yourself are rarely called to account for leaving out three quarters of the history so they can promote their agenda that they are always the victims and that all Gentiles are murderous bigots.

Hummm, a replay of what went on at Far West and Nauvoo is occurring here, less the bloodletting. At Nauvoo Smith tried to silence the press, just as jveritas is trying to silence the press here.

Now, if left up to jveritas, your ‘nasty, vicious insinuation’ would never be challenged because I would be banned for pointing out the historical facts (and yes, I have tons of original citations if anyone is interested). Which is all well and fine, but Hillary doesn’t play by your rules, Mitt’s beliefs will all be fair game if he can’t defend them (Huckabees too).
