Anti-Mormons Attacks Must Stop, FR is Better Than That (Vanity)
December 12 2007 | jveritas

Posted on 12/12/2007 6:27:59 PM PST by jveritas

Dear FRiends

It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the “freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.

I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.

I’ll second you on this. Pointing out the profound differences between Mormonism and Christianity must not be confounded with valid critiques of the political views and public policy prescriptions of candidate Romney.

I’d rather vote for a Mormon who’s had one marriage and stood by his wife who happens to have multiple sclerosis, than say, support someone who’s been married three times and deserted their wife when she had cancer (hint - Newt Gingrich). My point is, a portion of the vetting process should be how the candidates have conducted their lives. (And yes, I know Gingrich is not a candidate).

Read what you wrote, v e r y, s l o w l y...

Oh my, you are a smart one aren't you? How could I have missed such a glaring error?

You're right, I totally screwed up. I apologize for my missive. How could I have been so careless?

Let me correct the record:

Joseph Smith's miraculous visitation with The Heavenly Father (with his body of Flesh and Bone, just like man's) and Jesus Christ (where THEY told Joseph Smith that all the protestant and catholic churches and their professors were an abomination) took place in 1820 not 1830!

Thanks for corecting me.

[with disgusting anti-Mormom bigotry that has nothing to do with honest religious debate.]

Did someone make you God of this planet so you can decide what is honest religious debate, and what is not? I guess you can see into other human hearts, that’s mighty grand of you.

If you can’t come at Romney from this angle over his religion then you ARE a bigot.

That is a rather bigoted statement, wouldn't you say?

Thank you for reminding me of the particulars in that scene! It holds an important clue I’ve needed for something.

If we criticize Romney on his religion, then we may as well condemn Obama for being black, and Hillary for being a woman.

Now that statement is a bit ridiculous. You have no control over what race or gender you are, but you do have control over your ideology.

We criticize Obama and Hillary for being liberals. There was criticism when it came out that Obama's father was a Muslim turned atheist and people felt that he might be hiding the fact that he was raised as a Muslim. Do you think people on this forum are sinking low to discuss these things?

Not the entire thread, I only got through part of it. I wasn’t aware that a person was required to read the entire thread before posting a reply.

I’ll say it again: WOW. The MSM has turned the debate away from Romney the candidate to Mormonism the religion. Well played MSM. Keep on asking those “conservatives wonder about his mormonism” questions. Well played. Almost Rovian except he never would have sunk that low.

“Maybe you can start a world wide religion and have 13,000,000 members. I doubt it though.”

Many doubted Joseph Smith as well, but look what he gave birth to! Besides, Mormons believe each man can become God of his planet (sorry, women excluded unless they got procreatin hips). So I believe in 180 years, many billions will follow festus.

What, you are mocking our religions by doubting us?

Fortunately, all my ideas come though the broken bottom of a Coke Bottle, my “seer stone”. What my seer stone is telling me is that you have the brain of a pea.

Good start and it gets better as it goes. If anyone is in need of examples of what passes for intelligence, decency, discussion, open, honest, and dignified, it is here for all to see.

If someone believes in our Lord Jesus Christ than he or she is a Christian. If you want to have a religious/theological debate on who is Christian and who is not then Protestants will be fighting Catholics and Catholics will be fighting Orthodox and every sect will claim that they are the real Christians and others are not based on just strictly narrow dogmatic views. Do you want Free Republic to descend to this level? I do not.

HA! HA! HA!

It already has.

Again, this is what you wrote:

[Rudy Giuliani’s Catholicism is not an issue in this campaign, mainly because he is at best a nominal Catholic. But if Rudy suddenly had a stigmata experience or claimed to have personally spoken with the Virgin Mary who told him to run for President, you can bet your bottom dollar that Rudy’s Catholicism would be getting some serious scrutiny. Well Romney is a follower of a character who in 1830 claims to have been visited by God the Father (who just happened to have a body of flesh and bone) and Jesus Christ and they told his character that all the other churches in the world (yours, mine, everybody’s) was is open apostasy and their teachers were all corrupt and that he should join no church. Romney has undoubtedly stood up a thousand times in his lifetime and bore testimony that this Character was a True Prophet of God and that Mormonism is the ONLY TRUE CHURCH on the face of the earth. Every good Mormon is expected to bear that testimony in front of their congregations.”]

You’re comparing apples and oranges and you know it, and continue to purposefully obfuscate the truth. I have no respect for that.

Your rant claims that if Rudy “had personally had a stigmata experience or claimed to have personally spoken with the Virgin Mary who told him to run for President” that you could “bet your bottom dollar that Rudy’s Catholicism would be getting some serious scrutiny.” You go on to say: “Well Romney is a follower of a character who in 1830 claims to have been visited by God the Father (who just happened to have a body of flesh and bone) and Jesus Christ and they...”

So why the disconnect between Guiliani and Romney? You would question Guiliani if he claimed to have had a personal visitation from the Virgin Mary, but you chastise Romney for following his Church teachings from over a hundred years ago???? A stupid post which you continue to defend. Like I said, I have no respect for that...

How so? I am asking you to set aside your prejudices and judge Romney on the only area that should concern you. That is his impact on the public. At best you should only be attacking him for being hypocritical to his faith because that shows character. NOT attacking his faith to get at him unless you seriously think that something unique to his faith will tranfer over to his public policy. No booze? Polygomy? Give me one thing.

I'm curious about something.

I just scrolled through the thread that you linked @ #277.

You cited a comment @ #107 of that thread that you found to be, let's say, "unacceptable".

Perhaps you could explain why it is that you made 4 replies to that thread within 2 hours AFTER #107 was put up, 3 of which were posted within 30 minutes of #107, and two of which were addressed to comments made AFTER #107, yet failed to pass any comment about #107 if it was so "unacceptable"?

You're so quick to call me a bully, yet you apparently completely ignored what you found to be "unacceptable".

Like I said, I'm just curious.

You expect someone who believes that the Church of Latter Day Saints is that evil to never state his view? If he states his opinion as just that, it is an attack? He is supposed to remain quiet for the sake of the village. Where have I heard that before?

Please reread it. I said it was not an attack.

Then don’t read my posts! Skip over them. They are right on as far as Romney is concerned.

I have been a member of FreeRepublic for years and have never been accused of “spamming” in any way. You must be a Romney supporter. Romney was just waiting for someone to attack his faith. Huckabee fell for the bait thinking it might help him. He too would say anything to get elected!

Now...you expect real Conservatives to believe Romney is one of us. NOT! Romney’s religion is not the problem. Romney is a RINO pure and simple! I bet he is unbelievably angry about how much money he has spent in comparison to where he stands in the polls nationwide. I would expect him to do well in the Northeast due to the fact that the Northeast only elect RINOS! Romney has flipped on positions so many times, I’m surprised he even remembers what he said last, although what he says depends on just who he is talking to. Romney is a fine man...but he is not a Conservative unless you bend and warp the definition to fit your mold. You too are probably a RINO so you don’t recognize it.

FRED THOMPSON will win the nomination because he is REAL! You may not like him because your RINO ways will not accept the difference between a phony and a real Conservative. So sit on your SOFA man and leave me alone!
