Dear FRiends
It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.
I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.
Post 100. Great post MM..
No. God is God. YHWH, el-Shaddai, Creator of the fruit of the vine is God. The only God. How ridiculous to claim the “Son of God is God”. Are you both your son and your father? You accept that and you by definition a polytheist.

Right. People are making a bigger deal out of this than is necessary. A guy as talented as Mitt will have no problem justifying his belief in the things he believes in. If he gets the nomination, it will be a real education for the American people because I think many of them are curious about Mormonism. A guy like Mitt could use the campaign to get some converts.
Totally agree. It’s uncalled for especially when the majority of LDS members are good, kind, family oriented, clean living people who’ve played some major roles in our history.
“Might we not criticize the Mormons for referring to fellow Christians as “Gentiles”?”
I wasn’t aware that they did that. I had a mormon roomate in college and not once did he refer to me as a gentile. He didn’t once say “hey you gentile bastard, stop playing the music so loud”. Not once. Don’t you see how stupid your us versus them christian infighting is?
“Youre probably right on both accounts here, especially the second. I live slap right slap in the middle of the most Baptist area of the US. They even have religious police who confiscate your beer if you duck across the state line to Tennessee to buy some. People who have an occasional glass of wine with a meal here are prayed for.”
I suppose they would have busted Jesus for turning water into wine (John 2)?
A prime example of the use of a completely false and inflamatory argument, meant do start a fight not a discussion.
The LDS Church teaches no such thing, regardless what anyone says to the contrary. Below is the official word, from LDS.org
SALT LAKE CITY 12 December 2007 Like other Christians, we believe Jesus is the divine Son of God. Satan is a fallen angel.
As the Apostle Paul wrote, God is the Father of all. That means that all beings were created by God and are His spirit children. Christ, however, was the only begotten in the flesh, and we worship Him as the Son of God and the Savior of mankind.
Will a Mormon join a non-Mormon church? Will they, for example, feel free to join a Baptist church, or a Methodist church, or an Evangelical Free church, or a Presbyterian church, or a Pentecostal church? No, because they don’t consider them to be doctrinally sound. They consider them to be holding on to distorted doctrines. Mormons look down on the various Christian denominations; it shows me that they don’t consider themselves in the same camp as Christian churches. They themselves are separating themselves from Evangelical Christian churches and doctrine. It follows that they are not, therefore, Christian (though someone with the name “Jesus” is central to both faiths).
I feel free to attend and join any Evangelical church. Any church that dismisses Scripture as unreliable and faulty, and that trusts the writings of a creative man who translated now-missing Egyptian tablets into English using a hat and a rock, is not to be considered in the same camp as Christian churches that find Scripture trustworthy.
I, as a Christian, concur with Mormons that their faith is fundamentally different from mine.
I’d be happy to see Romney become President. It’d bring a microscope to the false doctrines collectively known as Mormonism.
1. Members of the Church of LDS are counted as members until they are over 100 years old. Even if they are known to have died.
2. Members who relocate from one church to another are counted on BOTH membership roles until the over 100 is reached.
3. According to the website mormoncurtain.com and several others the actual membership of the church is 2-4 million in the US. I have reviewed census numbers for the last census and by doing some simple math using the figures of people who indicate they are Mormon I can not get a membership number of more than 2.65 million in the US.
4. If all of the above is true. How are we suppose to treat a church that goes so far out of it's way to exaggerate members?
5. Lastly, I have been told by Mormons that they consider Jesus their "brother". Is that standard Mormon doctrine?
I ask with all due respect in search of the truth.
That means I can criticise your heresy and you can criticise mine, and we can all gang up on the orthodox.
The burden is on the censor to come up with some darned good reasons about why any particular item of speech should be deleted.
So far we have some pretty serious accusations on the board with absolutely no evidence that any of those accusations is true, or meaningful.
The request is that UNIDENTIFIED STATEMENTS BE DELETED BY THE ADMINISTRATORS.
It's like Hugo Chavez has taken over the ID of a couple of regulars here.
Agree 100%.
And that, too, is wrong.
What do you consider an attack?
In the religion forum the differences between denominations is regularly debated, and no one considers it an attack.
Apparently, the open forum can’t handle discussing differences and considers any such discussion to be an attack.
I deeply respect your work, jveritas, on the Iraqi documents. What if someone told you that analyzing Iraqi brand fascism under Saddam was an attack?
Yup, GENTILE. Someone not of the "elect" of God in some understandings of the term.
Seems to me the Church President would put that one on the top of his "to be revealed differently" list.
“I was curious to see what an Episcopalian flame war would be like. I imagined a lot of posts beginning with my dear woman and such.”
LOL. We just clinch our jaws and say things like “Buffy please see if that young man would like to play some tennis”.
Perhaps you could show us an example of a VICIOUS ANTI-MORMON ATTACK. The fact is that it is my experience here on Free Republic that most Mormon posters who wander into the theology debates react to challenges to their theology by whining, crying foul, accusing the posters of being Anti-Mormon bigots and they spend precious little time actually responding to the issues that are brought up about their unique doctrines and secret practices.
FWIW if Romney gets the nomination you can bet your bottom dollar that Hillary is going to have her minions play up the secret temple rituals, the 150 year ban on Blacks holding the priesthood, the Mountain Meadows Massacre, the doctrine of Eternal Progression, magic underwear while at the same time publicly playing up her mainstream Methodist background and wooing the evangelical voters who will be leery of electing someone who is not going to be straightforward in regard to their beliefs.
The issue of whether Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan were spiritual brothers and both sons of God created (or procreated) by the Heavenly Father, is an issue that is in the news. Mormons teach this doctrine but they are embarrassed by it and rather than admit that they actually believe it, they tend to dissemble, change the subject, or question the motives of the one who is asking.
The more of that kind of attitude I see here on Free Republic, the less likely I am to support Mitt Romney if he gets the nomination and all signs seem to be pointing in the direction of him walking away with that nomination if he can just keep the Mormon issue out of the forefront.
Rudy Giuliani's Catholicism is not an issue in this campaign, mainly because he is at best a nominal Catholic. But if Rudy suddenly had a stigmata experience or claimed to have personally spoken with the Virgin Mary who told him to run for President, you can bet your bottom dollar that Rudy's Catholicism would be getting some serious scrutiny. Well Romney is a follower of a character who in 1830 claims to have been visited by God the Father (who just happened to have a body of flesh and bone) and Jesus Christ and they told his character that all the other churches in the world (yours, mine, everybody's) was is open apostasy and their teachers were all corrupt and that he should join no church. Romney has undoubtedly stood up a thousand times in his lifetime and bore testimony that this Character was a True Prophet of God and that Mormonism is the ONLY TRUE CHURCH on the face of the earth. Every good Mormon is expected to bear that testimony in front of their congregations.
So Romney's religion is an issue. It might not be a big issue to the voters, but we certainly can't bury our heads in the sand and pretend that Hillary's secret police are not going to use it to their advantage in order to paint her as the real evangelical hope for America in the next election.
Frankly I'm getting pretty fed up with being called an Anti-Mormon bigot and an Anti-Mormon Jihadist merely because I ask a lot of questions on these threads and don't blindly accept vague and misleading answers.
The choice is ours. We can bury our heads in the sand and pretend that Romney's Mormonism is not going to be an issue or we can confront it and let the chips fall where they may. From your post it would appear that you would prefer to bury your head in the sand. That's fine. I can live with 4 years of Hillary (I lived with 8 years of Bill). Can you?
Well, no danged wonder they are such jerks...lapsed Baptists.
You accept that and you by definition are a polytheist.
