The announcement was made by Chief of the Supreme Council for Antiquities, Zahi Hawass who added that the discovery was made by a team of German archaeologists.

The sarcophagus that carries hieroglyphic inscriptions in colorful hues, has been repaired and will be put on display at a special show due to open at the Egyptian Museum Monday, he told a press conference held on the occasion of celebrations of the centenary of the establishment of the Deutsche Arehaologishes Institute in Cairo.

Praising cooperation between Egypt and Germany in the archaeological domain, he said that the two countries are discussing prospects of Germany's sending to Egypt the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti for three months so that it could be put on show at the opening of Egypt's and the world's first ever museum on monotheism, the Akhnaton Museum, that is planned for next year.

Addressing reporters to mark the occasion, the German Ambassador to Egypt, Bernd Erbel, talked about the cooperation between Egypt and Germany in the fields of culture, education and knowledge.

“Other than the whole bit about refusing to lend us the Nefertiti bust, which is the most famous single piece of ancient art known to exist, we’re getting along better than ever!” ;’)
