After years of relative safety, the Apple Mac is becoming an increasingly tempting target for malicious computer hackers, according to a new report published this week.
Security researchers have been aware of the threat to Apple since last year, when they detected the first piece of malicious code or malware specifically designed to target Apple.
Over the past few months, however, the number of malicious programmes has increased, according to a report published this week by F-Secure, an internet security company.
Over the past two years, we had found one or two pieces of malware targeting Macs, said Patrik Runald, an F-Secure security researcher. Since October, weve found 100-150 variants.

“I dont know why people have these stupid Mac vs. PC vs. (U)nix wars. The only thing I care about is that Apple stock has been very, very, very good for me over this past year.”
Cause its fun and brings out the inner geek. Again the only reason I like to throw darts at MAC is due to their commercials. Their elitist attitude is annoying.
Congrats on your wise investing. From what I know their rise is mostly due to success of the iPod.
No just plain text files which I actually love.
We're not discriminating against Mac-haters personally. We're discriminating against the low-quality products designed by Mac-haters.
“If they’re so easy to hack, why haven’t Mac owners had more problems with being hacked?”
Because so few people use MACs that the ROI is not adequate. Most hackers are in it or the money.
You might want to look up exactly what political persuasion Linus Torvalus (sp??) is.

No I refuse to have my bubble burst. Judging where he’s from theres really little doubt. The whole model of Linux is also a help. Nobody owns it, its a collective.
Actually, I just looked him up and I couldn’t even find a picture of him with Stalin. He seems to be a low profile guy, maybe he’s just a geek.

Low quality? you must be talking about my competition. :) I’m a firm believer in the free market. MS is the best because they’ve captured the market. They’ll continue to lead the market as long as they are the best.
Is someone coordinating the FUD? This is the second article like this today. Maybe it’s a slow news day so they have to recycle four-year old articles saying “The Mac Hack Attack is Coming Soon!”
He’s very apolitical. His father’s persuasions’ ruined politics for him.
Stop saying that..
Any system can be rooted, there is a bug out there which can and will root a box...
That being said Unix does have far superior security to the NT world..
“Maybe its a slow news day so they have to recycle four-year old articles saying “
Nope this is a new article. Musta been wishful thinking.
Why then are you even viewing the thread, much less participating in the discussion?
“Why then are you even viewing the thread, much less participating in the discussion?”
You know the saying about no such thing as a stupid question... seems you’ve managed to go against conventional wisdom.
Try this: curiousity. How about this: I work with computers for a living and like to see what’s said. Or even: I may learn something.
Are you suggesting that I have to pick a side to read this thread?
So they make a few changes before reposting. They're all in the same line every year, "The Mac's getting more popular, so there will be viruses in the wild soon!" I guess they're not selling enough Mac antivirus products.
It's happened before in the UNIX world, and it could happen again. The last big one I remember was Sadmind for Solaris several years ago, but they'd had a security patch out for about a year and a half before the worm appeared.
The histories of BSD and UNIX (AT&T) are heavily intertwined. Besides, Apple is one of only a few companies that can claim UNIX 03 certification and actually call their product by the trademark "UNIX." By the one true legal definition, OS X Leopard is UNIX.
Networking my Mac to my PC for printer and file sharing was easier than networking two PCs together.
