“I guess she has a lot of explaining to do,” police spokesman Stephen Alvarez said on Saturday.
Since I’ve seen two interviews with her and she stated in both she had no idea if the irritant was pepper spray or not, I’m not sure why she would have explaining to do.

While I know most pageant queens aren’t biochemists, shouldn’t her publicists have just claimed they were irritants rather than pepper spray?

They did not test for other chemicals. Then they have no room to say anything. There are a number of things that could have been used.

I was holding a can of pepper spray on my fridge for months thinking about giving it to a neighbor who needed it (I had NO use for it). Unfortunately, they had a falling out with us so I just dumped it in the can.
