David Copperfield Cancels Shows Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

BANGKOK, Thailand — American magician David Copperfield has canceled his upcoming shows in Southeast Asia following allegations of sexual misconduct in the United States, a Thai organizer said Monday.

"His management sent an e-mail to organizers Sunday to inform that his shows will be postponed indefinitely," said Kittiyong Achawaphong, a public relations official of RSi Dream Entertainment, which organized his shows in Thailand.

Copperfield was scheduled to perform in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in coming weeks. The cancellations come days after FBI agents searched his warehouse and a casino hotel in Las Vegas, where the magician regularly performs, following charges that he "forced himself" on an unidentified woman.

The way I understand is the woman claimed he raped her in July but just came out last week to complain about it.

I think she wanted something from him and David Copperfield said no, so she said I'll get you and charged him with rape. Now the question is did she go to the hospital after the alledged rape? If not then I don't think she has a chance

Why do you believe Copperfield didn’t do it?

Either way I hope justice is served. If he did it, I hope he is convicted and receives a just sentence. If he didn’t do it, I hope this woman is jailed for filing a false report and spends a significant amount of time behind bars for doing so.

These are serious charges, and nobody should be able to bring such charges unless they are on the up and up.

Well known people should not be easy targets for blackmail and character assassination.

He could always make the evidence “disappear”. Hell, if the magician career doesn’t work out, he would probably do well with the Clintons and Sandy Burglar. JK. I couldn’t help it :-)

I'd say a delay in reporting the crime indicates a higher probability of a false accusation; particularly where the alleged rapist is so wealthy that a civil suit based on the crime could garner huge amounts of money. Rape is one of the most common false accusations in criminal law (there are a lot of agendas that can drive this false accusation like shame, vengeance, blackmail, and many others . . . sex is different than other crimes).

They stated, "Every year since 1989, in about 25 percent of the sexual assault cases referred to the FBI where results could be obtained, the primary suspect has been excluded by forensic DNA testing. Specifically, FBI officials report that out of roughly 10,000 sexual assault cases since 1989, about 2,000 tests have been inconclusive, about 2,000 tests have excluded the primary suspect, and about 6,000 have "matched" or included the primary suspect."

The authors continued, "these percentages have remained constant for 7 years, and the National Institute of Justice's informal survey of private laboratories reveals a strikingly similar 26 percent exclusion rate."

If the foregoing results can be extrapolated, then the rate of false reports is roughly between 20 (if DNA excludes an accused) to 40 percent (if inconclusive DNA is added). The relatively low estimate of 25 to 26 percent is probably accurate, especially since it is supported by other sources.

That’s my theory too. So far, everyone insists he’s squeaky clean—doesn’t make sense.

Good thing its here in the US he’s charged and not in Singapore. Over there they would probably cane his butt until chunks were flying off....

He didn't really do it. It was an illusion.

I agree with you, but it is easy to claim that someone was raped when the person is rich. The thing is why did she wait so long to file charges and did the go to the hospital after she was alledgedly raped. If not there is no evidence. Saying that someone raped me doesn’t make it true

Fresh complaint? If not, why not? They have laws against rape in the Bahamas.

Rape protocol exam results? If none, why are there none?

Somebody needs to throw down the BS flag on this one.

Agreed

If he didn’t do it, I hope this woman is jailed for filing a false report and spends a significant amount of time behind bars for doing so.

That never happens, and is one of the reasons why some lowlifes use sexual allegations as a weapon.

About 50% of rape accusations eventually turn out to be false by the accusers own admission. Rape has the highest false accusation rate of any crime. The accused should almost always be given the benefit of the doubt and be treated as innocent until proven otherwise.

I agree and that’s a shame. Husbands and wives play this game too when they divorce. All of it is unfortunate to say the least.
