Palm Pilot question.
me ^ | 10-12-07

I've got a palm pilot that I never got around to using, much. But yesterday I tried to download some Word docs and got an error message. It couldn't download.

But it would only let me move the files to be downloaded to the expansion portion of the pilot. Only, I didn't have an expansion card. So I went to Office Depot and got a 2 gig card for $20.

It still wouldn't accept the Word files. Then I copied and pasted to the "Memos" function. But I don't think it had anything to do with the expansion card.

Now I've got a 2 gig expansion card. What's it for?

Another question, how do I download MS Word files? Am I supposed to install Word on my Palm Pilot?

Thanx.

Not sure what model you are using, but most (older) Palm Pilots coe with only 8, 16, or 32 MB of on board memory. This means that it’s wise to have an expansion card. A 2GB is great. Just slip it in the slot and never remove it.

To look at any Microsoft document requires third party software like Documents To Go. Their office suite runs around $50.00 and you can buy it on line or at a local store that sells PDAs. I use it and it works great. I moved from a Palm m515 to a Treo 650 and the program works well on both.

I was thinking PalmOS vs. Windows....I’ve never tried it myself. There may be an application that does it though.

Zire 72s.

Re memory. It said I had 24 megs of memory left. So I added a 2 gig expansion card.

When I fill up 24 megs of data, the overflow goes to the expansion card?

If the file is larger than your Palm’s memory capacity of conversion it’ll have be transferred directly to the card. If your Palm has Documents To Go installed, there is an option to allow you to do this. If the Palm doesn’t have DTG, you can’t view Word files.

“of conversion” = “after Documents To Go converts the file”

I wonder how much memory is eaten up by Documents to Go?

I don’t know, but it’s essential if you want to view Word, Excel or PP docs on your Palm.

Just install your Word doc to the memory card.

What S&A said.

DTG is pretty handy for using Word & Excel files on Palm -- but only in a pinch. No way will the document be as legible/clear as it would be on a regular PC screen.

Still easier than sticking a CRT in your pocket.

Do yourself a favor.

Use that Palm product as a paperweight. It's the only thing their stuff is good for.

I've owned two Palm products.

The only thing worse than their products is their service.

Palm products are overpriced crap.

Buy yourself a $32 memory stick and be done with it. There's absolutely no good reason to give Palm a dime.

At least you'll know the memory stick will work 95% of the time. The same can't be said for Palm products.
